NIT / CBI

Do they require schools to pay to play also? Just curious

We paid no money when we played at northern iowa; further, our travel expenses would have been paid had we done the flight to Chicago and 6 hour bus ride. Instead, since we chartered a flight, our travel expenses were only partially reimbursed (and I agree with that decision).
CIT is a pay to play AT HOME tournament. We only paid for the right to host the game. The top seeded team has the right of first refusal to pay for home advantage. SMU has acknowledged that, while we were not turning a profit with the attendance and concessions, this was meant to draw attention to the program regionally. Rich Philips said it cost the teams $30k (and change) EACH game, but I had originally heard that it was a one-time fee, so I'm not exactly sure if we paid $30k or $90k overall. I'm fine either way.
The NIT locations are determined based on seeding until it reaches the final four at MSG.

There was a trade out on the N Iowa trip as the charter also took out the overnight accommodations to be paid by the CIT. CIT invites the teams for the Tourney ( they have a big and impressive list of members that vote on who to invite, go to their website and see the members) and the teams have the option to pay for the $31,500 fees for each Home game and the school gets to take the total Home proceeds of ticket sales and concessions at each home game.
Don't know abut the NIT but for instance the CBI Tourney has much larger fees to be the Home team....its $35,000 for the first round game and jumps to $50,000 for the second round game and $75,000 for each game of the semi's and finals of the Tourney..you better have an established home crowd and good concessions to offer for sale. Popcorn, pretzels, plain hot dogs and cokes served at SMU will never assist in the totals to offset those kind of entry fees to be a home team. I know there are posters who laugh at us who mention the weak offerings at the concession stands at SMU, but its a fact that you need diversity and a better product to make it a profitable enterprise.

Given the choice between the CBI and CIT I would rather go back to the CIT. That is of course if we don't make the NCAA tournament or NIT which goes without saying.

Look at the situation with Creighton U who had the option of the CIT or CBI this year and opted for the CIB and play for the championship against Oregon with a best out of three Championship starting Monday night. But the next two games will be played at Oregon ( If a third game is required) so Oregon has the distinct advantage in the third game at home but they were the higher seed and could also afford much more readily the additional $75,000 for the extra game.

To me that totally devalues the tournament even if that team has a strong power rating.
