Moody Renovation - $80 million

Looky looky what I found:

http://www.moore-engineers.com/disciplines/sustainable-design.shtml

These guys cite as a current project:

Southern Methodist University – Moody Coliseum
$80 million renovation project targeting LEED®–NC Silver Certification

I'm much rather spend money on an IPF than throw a bunch of money trying to get a 50 year old building to LEED Silver, but nevertheless an $80 mil renovation is a good sign! Wow!

Thanks for the find. If we're talking $80 million, that makes me think that there is a lot more involved than just your standard makeover.

Totally speculating, but I wonder if the IPF and Natatorium are part of this.

I'm reflecting upon some conversations I had with Tim McMurray about 4 months ago. He said they were really amping up try and get some big projects going.

Should be interesting to see how this unfolds.

Leed certification is something the school has been doing throughout campus, waterless urinals, ect.

not the same renovation that will be talked about is my guess...

Others have pointed out that the tennis courts are moving across Mockingbird, but I would think that would be too small an area for a swimming facility. I guess we'll see. $80 mil would create a quality facility. Perhaps even worth of a BCS conference that cares a lot about basketball...

LEED certification would be something done as part of a major renovation. The $80 million figure would be the total cost of the renovation.

80 mil is more than ford...

I mean I know there is inflation out there, but this is nuts...

The area next to the tennis courts that was originally supposed to be an indoor tennis facility- the two land areas there would be enough for a fair-sized facility.

might likely include the tennis relocation south of mockingbird, moody re-do (moody will be nowhere near 80 by iteself) and also might include the new parking structure which will sit where the tennis courts are now. the parking garage will be needed to help stage the construction of the sophamore housing project which is nearing reality just east of Ford.

i like contemporary also - but no way will they try to mix the "look". GT will not go for that - and it is probably not appropriate given the location.

The parkland example is fine - but I actually think it looks a little schitzo- - the inside is great and the outside is just ok.

To each their own. I don't think it will happen, but if I had my druthers, that's what I'd like to see. It would provide a dramatic entrance, expand that space, and allow us to hang banners and display our past glory. Not to mention it would go along way to getting a daylighting credit for LEED.

Another example, but again more depth and I'd make it less cold. I've seen a great example of what I'm trying to illustrate, but so far my Google image searches are coming up empty.

I would assume a renovated Moody Coliseum will keep the Georgian architect style so it will match the rest of the campus.

What is "modern" now is soon dated looking. Please please let's stick to classic Georgian (moody has a long way to go in that department to match campus) and get the daylighting via windows and solar tubes PLEASE.

I love this thread, cause I have no understanding of architecture at all.

In any other location (i.e. not on SMU campus) i would be all for contemporary - but in this location with Georgian in every direction - the context it too critical. We dont want to end up like those state schools where you have lots of mish mashed architecture that looks dated in 30 yrs. There is NO chance we will vary from the georgian brick look - we have the most cohesive campus in the country - and like it or not it is not changing.

Yup. Dunno why anyone would think the update would be anything other than Georgian.
My frog, aggie, tech friends are always impressed with the look of the campus when they've visited. And for good reason - it looks good. No mishmash or anything.
