What $20 Million gets you

Postby RGV Pony » Fri Apr 15, 2011 10:25 am

Tennessee recently upgraded their arena in two phases, the first of which was $20 Million. Phase I did the following:
Phase I of the improvements began construction in March 2007. Phase I included concourse improvements, new seats for the entire arena, a center hung scoreboard, luxury suites and loge seating.

Iowa is renovating Carver-Hawkeye Arena, and raised $20 million, with a $15 million initial gift and a goal of another $5 million from luxury seat sales. Their project sounded more like a Crum addition though:
The Carver-Hawkeye Arena – Addition and Renovation Project will construct a practice facility addition with two practice gymnasiums, immediately north of the Arena for use by the University of Iowa’ men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball programs. The addition would meet the University’s need for additional practice space to supplement the Arena, which is the University’s only practice facility for these and several other athletic programs. This limitation results in many conflicts in the scheduling of athletic competitions, practices, and other events in the Arena.

Since its construction in 1983, the Arena has received only minor modifications and improvements; thus, renovations are also included in the project. It would refurbish and expand the wrestling practice room, and fitness and weight training facilities; and improve and expand locker room facilities.

The project would also provide improved office accommodations for coaches and Athletic Department functions. Also included are expanded and improved spaces for concessions and restroom facilities; replacement of the existing “collapse-able” seating to permit courtside and other premium seating opportunities; and the expansion of hospitality and meeting spaces combined with club facilities for premium seating occupants.

Finally, the project would upgrade the building’s fire alarms, elevators and mechanical systems.

Any other thoughts? This is more fun than a secret coach thread

USF's arena is getting a $30 Million makeover...some of these sound like what Moody needs:

Seating will be added to the corners of the lower level in the Sun Dome, creating a bowl design similar to the upper level. A center-hung scoreboard will also be included, rather than the four video boards currently positioned over the tunnels in each corner.
A new concourse and concession areas are also included in the update to the building, which is approaching its 31st birthday. Construction began in 1977, and the Sun Dome opened Nov. 29, 1980.
One reason for the renovations is an apparent lack of compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Western Kentucky $35 Million renovation

All team sports at WKU are competing in brand new, recently renovated, or soon-to-be constructed or renovated facilities. In 2003, the Hilltoppers opened the season in the newly renovated, $35 million E.A. Diddle Arena. The renovated arena contains 16 luxury suites; a new playing floor; all-new seating, concession, and restroom areas; elevator access to all levels; new sound and lighting systems; two new auxiliary gymnasiums; new training and weight rooms; air conditioning; and new locker and office space complex facilities for multiple sports and athletic administration.

Georgia Tech started with a $15M gift and conducted a $45 million renovation

http://blogs.ajc.com/georgia-tech-sport ... illerdome/

Capacity went from 9200 to 8900

some highlights that would fit well w/ Moody:

When fans enter the building, they will walk in a large, open concourse that stretches 270 degrees around the court, which will be visible. Radakovich said that openness was an important asset, noting that the closed-off concourse design of AMC can make it difficult to know where you are in relation to the court.

There will be no suites in the arena. When considering that feature, Radakovich said it was decided that suites were not necessary because of the shortness of the basketball season and that this will be a basketball-only facility. He said there are numerous other places in the city that host concerts and other events. He also noted that with the exception of multi-purpose units that some ACC teams use, few other collegiate basketball arenas have suites.

Patrons of the club will seat in the gold seats across from the benches.

Instead, McCamish will feature a club that will feature two different seating areas. One area, containing approximately 500 seats, is exclusive for certain donors who have access to the exclusive entrance behind the building. The other exclusive area has 300 seats. The 270-degree concourse actually stops at either end where the 500-seat area starts. That area is located across from the benches.

Most of the seats will be chair-back and there will be an upper deck that has 1,800 seats. The student section will be behind the baskets, very close to Bobby Cremins court.

also similar, but cant find much detail: Notre Dame spent $25 million renovating their basketball arena, widening concourses, adding a two-story entryway plaza, and reducing capacity from 11000 to 9000.

When was the last time Moody underwent a substantial renovation? I'm not talking about things like the new floor or the scoreboard. I wonder if the age of Moody will end up making it cost substantially more. than some of the above listed projects.

On a side note, anybody need a patent attorney?

Moody has never had those kinds of extensive renovations. However, blue backed seats were added in the East stands about 30 years ago. They used to be bare concrete.

If I recall UALR ran you out of your own gym....A guy who could barely get off our bench was your 3rd best player....And I like Mangrum and am glad he went somewhere where he could get some real minutes......Due to injury he would have been able to play a little more for us this past season....But he was about the 10th best player for us....So you do the math...

says the guy whose team got "ran out of [their] own gym" by 7-24 ULM.
