Hoopmax: Thank you for sharing. Jim Krebs had 24 against San Francisco and the great Bill Russell! He must have been an outstanding player at 6'8". Did he play in the NBA? It sounds like Doc was a wonderful person and basketball coach. That was a wonderful article. Did Doc and his wife have any children? If so, do you know where they live? He would have been proud of Rob getting the most improved player award this season.

RGV - Thank you! Some additional items of interest on Jim Krebs according to wikipedia. He was instrumental in creating such interest in basketball at SMU that they built the 2.23 million dollar Moody Arena. He played 7 years for the Lakers and they made the NBA finals three years. The Lakers team plane crashed in Carroll, Iowa when he was on the plane but everyone survived the crash. He died at age 29 from a freak accident when a neighbors tree fell on him. His number has been retired by SMU. His wife was expecting a baby at the time of his death.

I have fond memories of the Doc Hayes era of SMU hoops; that's when I became a fan of SMU but never attended a game until many years later...after the family had moved away from Dallas and I came back as a student. By then, Bob Hewitt had taken over the program. Have been waiting patiently for our next "legendary" coach and wondering if we will ever have one?
