Kenny Smith To Speak At SMU Tip-Off Dinner On Oct. 13

DALLAS (SMU) --- The SMU men's basketball team will host its sixth annual Tip-Off Dinner at the Park Cities Hilton Ballroom on Thursday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. TNT analyst and two-time NBA champion Kenny Smith will serve as the keynote speaker. Head coach Matt Doherty will also preview the 2011-12 season on the Hilltop.
"I am thrilled to have my old teammate, Kenny 'The Jet' Smith, join us for this year's Tip-Off Dinner," says Doherty. "He accomplished so much as a player at UNC and as an NBA player with the Houston Rockets, winning multiple championships; then moving on to his role as a professional in the world of TV. He will certainly be entertaining as he shares his unique insight with the audience at this year's event. It is a must see!"

Smith becomes the sixth member of an elite list of speakers for the event following SMU great Jon Koncak (2006), television commentating legend Bill Raftery (2007), prominent coach and analyst Fran Fraschilla (2008), ESPN college basketball analyst Hubert Davis (2009) and NFL Hall of Fame receiver Michael Irvin (2010).
Smith in entering his 14th season as a studio analyst for the Emmy award-winning Inside the NBA on TNT with host Ernie Johnson and analyst Charles Barkley. Smith played under legendary coach Dean Smith from 1983-87 at North Carolina, where he was a teammate of Doherty's in 1983-84. Smith was a First-Team All-America in his final season in Chapel Hill. Upon graduation, the Sacramento Kings selected Smith with the sixth pick in the 1987 NBA Draft. In 1994 and 1995, he won back-to-back NBA championships as a member of the Houston Rockets.
SMU enters 2011-12 following its first 20-win season and first postseason bid since 1999-2000; finishing 20-15 and advancing to the CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT) semifinal. SMU also had its most wins in Conference USA (8) while leading the league in field goal (7th NCAA), 3-point (13th NCAA) and free throw percentage (38th NCAA).
