NEW ORLEANS (SMU) --- Men's basketball Director of Operations and SMU alum, Gerald Lewis, will be inducted into the St. Martin's Episcopal School Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday, Sept. 30. Lewis is a 1989 graduate of St. Martin's and a 1993 graduate of SMU. Lewis will be inducted in a ceremony as part of the school's Homecoming Day celebration.
"I am accepting this award on behalf of the many teachers, coaches and family members who supported me and believed I was capable of being successful in that environment," said Lewis. "I am truly thankful to God for blessing me and putting the right people in my life."
At St. Martin's from 1987-1989, Lewis scored a total of 1,243 points, the only player in St. Martin's history to achieve 1,000 points in two years. As a senior point guard at St. Martin's, Gerald averaged 23.4 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 5.0 steals per game. He was selected all-state, all-district, and all-metro in both his junior and senior seasons; was district and metro MVP in 1988-89 when the team had a 22-8 record; and averaged 17.1 points, 9.1 assists and 7.2 rebounds as a junior when the team finished 27-5 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the State Class AA playoffs. Gerald was a three-year letterman at St. Martin's.
At SMU, Lewis earned first team All-Southwest Conference honors in 1993, leading the Mustangs team to the SWC regular season title and an NCAA Tournament berth. During his senior season at SMU, he became one of only eight players in NCAA history to record three triple-doubles. He still holds the single-season mark for steals with 79 in 1992-93.
Lewis played professional basketball for six years in the Croatian Basketball League in Europe, where he was a five-time All-Star from 1994-2000 and was named MVP in the 1996 All-Star game. Lewis then began coaching, first at Southeastern Louisiana in 2004-05 and then at New Mexico State, where the team won the WAC Tournament Championship and earned an NCAA Tournament berth in 2009-10.
