Per SMUMustangs.com: Robert Nyakundi, Jeremiah Samarrippas and ... Shawn Williams? I'm sure he's a great player, and Coach Doherty said he's a great guy, but to be named captain before ever playing a minute of a single game is very interesting.

Does anyone know of that happening? Ever? In any sport?

I sure can't think of an example.

The NC State QB who transferred this season to Wisconsin was named a captain before the season started.

Keith Brooking had that with the Dallas Cowboys.

You're right though. It would certainly be rare in college sports. Not quite the same, but Tech had a few quarterbacks, Hodges, Cumbie, and Symons in the early 2000's that never started until their senior year and were captains. They only played limited downs, injury downs, or junk time as underclassmen, but they did play before becoming captains. I would not be completely surprised it happened like this somewhere else.

Good to hear that a transfer has been able to come in and mesh well with his new team mates. People are expecting big things from Williams.

Outside of my belief that multiple captains are a terrible idea, I like the notion of naming Williams as captain. With the huge turnover on this years team, and with only two players who saw significant action last season, having a leader among the new blood could be a stroke of genius. It might give the team more of a sense of itself off the bat because the new kids are represented, almost a tacit admission that they aren't just an experiment but they are established. We'll see how it goes, but I am pumped.
