This season marks an important milestone for the Florida Gulf Coast University basketball program, as they complete the “transition phaseâ€, and become full members of NCAA Division 1. For the first time, FGC will be able to compete in the American Sun Conference tournament, and are eligible for the NCAA tournament, should they earn a bid. With their new status comes a new coach, several new faces in the lineup, and possibly a new attitude.
Time is short, so I wont go into too much detail. FGC 's freshman class looks like it could eventually turn them into a legitimate team. They've used a different starting 5 in every game this year, but 3 freshmen have become regulars in the lineup. Brett Comer, a 6'2†point guard leads FGC in almost every statistical category, averaging 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 6.3 assists per game. He has almost as many assists as the entire SMU team. In just his first 3 college games,Comer has emerged as his teams “Go-to†guy, their unquestioned leader on the court. Bernard Thompson, a 6'3†freshman shooting guard, is next on their scoring list at 12.7 ppg, and he also pulls in 5 rebounds a game. Sherwood Brown, a 6'4†junior has started in 2 games this year, and has averaged more than 11 points and 5 boards per contest. Kevin Cantinol, Chase Fieler, Filip Cvjeticanin, and Eddie Murray are all in the 6'8â€-6'9†range, and all have started twice, in different combinations. Fieler has been the most productive of the group, averaging 6 points and 5.3 rebounds per game, but all 4 will play in any given game, and as a group they give FGC a size factor that they didnt have in past seasons. Six players average 5 rebounds per game, or more, they seem to make hitting the backboards a priority.
I'm not ready to call FGC a “good†team yet, but they're no longer the patsy they were when they began their move up to Division 1. They have a legitimate go-to player in Comer, and height and depth that they have never had before. Kevin Cantinol is the only senior who starts, and the young players have talent that would indicate a solid future for the Eagles.
