Maryland vs FIU

Postby Hoop Fan » Wed Dec 14, 2011 9:55 pm

ponydoh might have some insight but what was up with that 'crowd' tonight at Maryland? seriously looked like Moody East when we play an unknown opponent -empty. Just goes to show that a mediocre team and unknown opponent don't draw, even if people are still excited about Turgeon as a coach. June could take note of this reality.

Lots of factors, but in general, you are right. Happens most places. Strange times at Maryland & lots of contributing factors. That said, people are delighted w/Turgeon. He's a really solid X & O guy, excellent bench coach, and manages the clock/roster very well. Next year he has some talent, so there are no expectations this year. 7 scholarship kids. Terps, at times, have 3 walk-ons on the court at a time, stealing minutes until they get two starters back in a few weeks.

yeah, i understand. I like turgeon, he seems old school in a good way. Are the Maryland boards freaking about that crowd and impact on recruiting like we do here? It looks pretty sparse from the shots on tv, can't imagine a good bball school like MD has ever had a worse crowd really.

Turgeon is old school, but hired hip-hop recruiters at Maryland. Great combo. Maryland has had plenty of crowds like that, as has much of the rest of the ACC etc. Half the Big East has crowds like that during conference play. Its just going to happen night before exams. By the end of the year, they'll average 15k plus for games. Nobody shows for no name OOC games in any major market in America. If it were Kansas or somewhere isolated, I'd have expected a bigger crowd.

FWIW, nobody on the Terp boards care about the crowd. More an aberration than the norm

You bet! Sorry for the Maryland fans on here, but here's to hoping he's easy to steal from Maryland at some point. :P

Cheers!

LOL @ easy steal. He's a Kansas guy, so I get the attraction, but his family lives in a gorgeous place mid Chevy Chase, w/the in laws about an 1.5 hrs away. That family just got a major quality of life bump, and last I spoke w/him, they weren't looking to head back to the sticks in the near future. Wifey likes Christmas shopping in Georgetown

I'm sure there will be a friendly wager in play at some point!!

Sticks...lol!!!

comparatively, it's pretty much the sticks. Decent college town, though.

Chances are I won't bet against an alum leaving to go home. What I will say is that he better achieve at Maryland, or not sure why Kansas would care. Also, his new assistants wouldn't come w/him, I'd doubt. One is a Balt guy, the other DC. Spinelli will have a head job by then too.

You're just fun to goad! I'm all for people dropping roots in a new place. Most people are quick to forget that while Lawrence is a "decent" college town, it's a short 30 minute (+/-) drive to Kansas City (which adds to the appeal of Lawrence). KC is definitely not the sticks (unless you’re comparing it to top metros, of course).

You never know w/these guys or what motivates. Maryland fans tend to be huge fans of college hoops, but don't have other cheering interests like I do w/SMU etc. It's actually really rounded me as to what happens at all levels of competitive ball. Terp fans will need to adjust to not having alums as the coach. There was never any jeopardy of Gary Williams leaving, no matter what the offer. They don't have a first hand understanding of how this whole industry in assassins w/minimal loyalty.
