My Thoughts on the Jacksonville Debacle

Postby shadowman » Sat Dec 17, 2011 12:39 am

First of all, yes, I was there. I have stayed out of the initial fray when emotions were running hot and I certainly realize and appreciate the need for people to vent, that is what message boards are for.

First of all, the location. Very nice arena, however, zero atmosphere, it just had such a sterile feel and the crowd for SMU just never really got into it. Of course, a lot of that had to do with the opponent. I am sure, most were like me, figuring this was going to be no problem and just never really got excited until the end when it was close.

I thought we had a decent crowd. That was quite a haul to get down there in the rain, rush hour traffic, and christmas shoppers. I certainly don't judge anyone who skipped it or listend on the radio.

Very embarrassing to lose that game, but I saw no real flaws in coaching. I really do think you can chaulk it up to playing in a strange place with no atmosphere, the team was rusty and we are still trying to figure out or rotation with these new additions.

The reason we lost mainly was because Jacksonville got super hot mid way through the second quarter. We weathered the storm and almost came back, just wasnt to be.

I did see that Jacksonville only lost at Tulsa by 7 points.

I still like the talent on this team and just want the team to improve now that we have everyone we expected in uniform. We still have some games to get this in pretty good shape for conference play and I think we will surprise some people.

I have attended 90 plus percent of all SMU home games and great number of road games since the early nineties and I really do like this team much more than what we had most those years.

Give the players and the coaches a chance to get everyone on the same page.

/cheers

For what it's worth, The Jackson State coach's resemblance to Herman Cain was striking, to put it mildly. Theoretically, that may have served to confuse some of the Republican Mustang players, causing them to lose some of their focus. It may have led to half hearted defense against the three point shot. It may have caused Jeremiah to be a little sloppy passing the ball (he's too short), and may have caused some very poor FG shooting concentration - there were some very poorly timed shots thrown up, as well as near zero concentration by some of the guys at the free throw line - that is, IF they were Republicans.

My Thoughts on the Jacksonville Debacle

The coaching flaw is that we lost the game, plain and simple. Tulsa might have won by 7, but they still won. That's the difference between a mediocre team and a pathetic version that Doh has built here.

Kind of like a football coach who is a "quarterback" guru and 4 heading into the fifth year on the job, still doesn't have a QB for his system........

Well said Cox. I have always liked Doh, but he has had a lot of time to get this program going again. We need to get good in bball, and there is no reason we shouldn't already be closer than we are.

I think at issue here is ‘more time’

Some want Doh gone immediately.

Others such as myself, think he deserves this entire season, especially after his success late last year. If he fails this year, I know of no poster who wants him around next year.

BTW, has anyone else noticed Northern Iowa, that team we defeated on the road during the CIT? They are 9-1 with victories over BE Providence, BigXII Iowa St and Big10 Iowa.

This aint football,

Not every game means something....It is how we are playing when conference play starts.

Doherty has recruited some pretty damn good talent, regardless of what some think, we did not lose the Jacksonville game due to coaching.

Sneaking feeling, let's get to conference play and there will be lots of SMU fans pleasantly surprised.

Doherty is here for the right reasons, he is the right coach, the right recruiter, he has the skins on the wall.

How many of the other candidates out there recruited a national championship team, was the AP coach of the year, In all of college basketball.

We will get there, just takes patience...because we are SMU and nothing comes easy.

shadowman I am not disagreeing with your comments but...its Jackson State...not Jacksonville, as we played them last year. And the Jacksonville coach and AD last year thought the game was a debacle, if you remember.

Shadowman - right, this is not football - so it should not take this clown 6 years to do something. You forgot to give him credit for playing with jordan...remember that's how doh knows somehing about scoring (according to the hype when he first arrived).......

As I have shown on this board before. That was an effin' foul. Dia got knee'd in the back.

You guys are funny....

And for the record...I think SMU blew that big lead and there was no foul!

Yes, I meant Jackson St., silly me....Still though.

Doherty is not going anywhere. I can tell you right now, the donors that control basketball are all RoboDoh fans....Hell, that is where all my donations go. Those of us that put our money where our mouth is support Coach Doh and we are almost there.

Shadowman,

How do you square your positions on the fball and bball coaches? I find the tenor of your two positions curious.

We do know doh is on the hot seat, it just got a little hotter.
