The SMU Washington Generals Mustangsthe game was won. Will we ever get a win over a real program?? Okie State has some talent of course but is so young besides Page that we shoulda gotten the job done. Doherty is so all over the place. Pats starts then barely plays in the second half. Clinkscales barely plays for game after game, then all of a sudden is a fixture in the lineup in the second half. Doh gives up on Vilde it seems, and now Cunningham was been buried on the bench after making a few nice moves in the first half. Finally, I saw Doh substitute Manual in for defense in the SECOND overtime! Nice idea Doh, just too late. How bout doing that to protect the three point line when the only way you can lose a six point lead in one minute is to give open looks from 3.
Decent college bball atmosphere. At least we had as many fans as OSU did and we held our own noise wise.
Re: The SMU Washington Generals MustangsI don't have a problem w/any of that.
Re: The SMU Washington Generals Mustangsbesides finding some consistency in the rotation, we need to find the future leaders of this team. Don't think it can be JFrog. I saw some potential tonight for Leslee to be that guy but he has to get healthy. Great throwdown he made but he still looks a little hesitant on the knee and a few pounds overweight. Can Nick Russell be the guy? It was disappointing how Cotton played tonight. He had a sweet stroke in high school but his jump shot doesn't look sound or smooth to me right now.
Re: The SMU Washington Generals MustangsI thought Giles was a no show
Re: The SMU Washington Generals Mustangs
I'm surprised. I thought he was a cold blooded shooter in high school with alot of moxie. I thought he would really become a big game player for us especially in a game like tonight vs Okie State on tv, at American Airlines Center, his hometown, all that.
Re: The SMU Washington Generals Mustangs
I think Nick is more 'the guy' than say Cotton, but you have to groom Manuel to the PG now. Frog is a gutsy kid that can give you good minutes, but you can't let his limitations hurt you. Smith is going to be really good. He has 2 or 3 polished low post moves, and is pretty savvy around the cup. His dunk was the best I can remember in a long time.
Re: The SMU Washington Generals MustangsYou can see there are real pieces to this team that get you excited. And then there are pieces that remind you of the Jimmy Tubbs (god rest his soul) era. It's not hard to spot on either side.
Somehow, there has to come a point where Doherty says he knows who his go-to players are. Frog is not one of them. Neither is Losh. I just don't know if you get the execution down the stretch from Manuel tonight either. Maybe you get it in his sophomore year. I still don't know why Williams was a non-factor toward the latter stages of the game (conditioning? hurt?)
Re: The SMU Washington Generals Mustangs
I don't know if you get late game execution from Manuel tonight, but if we're holding to for one shot, and telling our primary ball-handler to drive/finish/dish, I want the 6'5 PG that's athletic and gets to the rack.
Re: The SMU Washington Generals Mustangs
ding ding. That, or if you want someone OTHER than your point guard to take the shot, it should be Manuel. Williams created his own shot in the first half. Nyuk, Williams, Smith down low. Right there are three options better than Frog tossing up a prayer.
Re: The SMU Washington Generals MustangsI'm just trying to see Dohertys rationale and why he stuck with Frog. I don't agree with it. Maybe a Manuel freshman mistake in that situation. Of course we barely saw Manuel all night so he wasn't going to be the choice there anyway.
Re: The SMU Washington Generals MustangsVery frustrating that Frog had the ball to finish the game twice.

Re: The SMU Washington Generals Mustangsdisagree with you on the not that talented part. I think this team has more talent then any we have seen in 20 years.
also dont think manuel is quite ready - which is why doh sticks with Frog. He will be ready soon but hasnt had enough point guard experience. i am baffled on cunningham. I think he deserved a ton more time - he ican do more on the floor then Smith in my opinion. I would junk losh - dont get the attraction. and where is Vilde? Thought he was best practice player on the team last year?
Re: Re: The SMU Washington Generals Mustangs
Cunningham came in the game in the first half and sparked the team. And then Doh benched him the rest of the game. What the hell was that?
Re: The SMU Washington Generals MustangsI cannot understand the decisions made by Doh. What in the world was he thinking letting JFROG take the ball in the last two overtimes. Robert, Williams or Giles should of had the ball. No offense to JFROG but he was not the right man for the job.
Re: The SMU Washington Generals MustangsSitting Cunningham is baffling. My biggest complaint of Doherty has been his substitution patterns. They've never made sense. Some things don't change.
I was real impressed with Smith, huge upside with him. Cotton was disappointing, he couldn't throw it in the ocean. We are young and hoopmanx, you're right. We have nice upgrade in talent. I'm just hoping Doherty, or someone gets the most out of it. SMU-12 NCAA appearances, 1 Final Four
