Re: Congrats Doh!. Matt Doherty, SMU
Offense: So, about that whole "moving to the Big East" thing Bottom 10 judgment: "One Of Us Must Know (Sooner Or Later)." Matt Doherty's eventual post-UNC-demise journey has not been particularly kind. After leaving Florida Atlantic, Doherty headed to Dallas, and his SMU teams have notched more than 14 wins in just one season; his record at the school (as of this writing) is 78-104. Doherty did build a 20-game winner in 2011, a team that finished a surprising .500 in a decent Conference USA. But this season has marked another step backward. SMU is 2-8 and in last place. On Saturday, the Mustangs fell 43-39 (yes, 43-39) at Rice. Even worse, SMU becomes a member of the Big East in 2013. This barely made sense in football. In basketball, it's lambs to the slaughter. "When I saw you say goodbye to your friends and smile/I thought that it was well understood/That you'd be comin' back in a little while/I didn't know that you were sayin' goodbye for good."
Re: Congrats Doh!28 points? In a full game? Seriously? Is this right?
I was at work til around 10pm last night, so I didn't see the game. How is UAB only 6-6 in CUSA with what must be the best defense in the country? Derail the Frogs!
Re: Congrats Doh!Junior, I was at the game and UAB was not a good team. That's the sad part. They had poor ball handlers, horrible shooters, but out hustled us on the offensive boards. SMU was not motivated, obviously had a pitiful shooting night (10% from the three point line and 17% from the field) but that part didn't bother me. They played uninspired basketball and it was obvious the coach has lost his team. In the 35 years I have been watching SMU basketball at Moody, this was the worst loss I've ever seen. Not necessarily because of the score, but because of the fact the guys didn't seem to want to be on the court and definitely were not motivated to play for their current coach. This was probably the worst played game I have ever seen at any level.
Re: Congrats Doh!Robo Doh needs to be arrested by RoboCop for impersonating a basketball coach.
Re: Congrats Doh!Obviously Doherty was not the one scared to shoot, launching air balls, blowing layups, clanking wide open 10 footers off the side of the rim, bricking free throws etc.....but you have to have the feeling that he has made a negative impact on the players confidence and psyche and has created an environment that is not tolerable.
He says all the right things in the press conference, but I think it is hollow and he is really treating and belittling the players every chance he gets. Probaly won't happen...BUT...maybe it will!!
Re: Congrats Doh!seriously out-hustled on rebounds, gave up wide open looks at the 3-line, we shot horribly from outside (not unlucky, horribly) with ball bouncing off the sides of the rim, drives inside were ended with desperate-looking chunking up the in the general direction of the basket, missed layups, missed tap-ins, not a lot of fouls granted because we were jacking up awful 3 with space, shot pporly from the free-throw line...on and on
I will say this. Toward the end of the game and at the end of the half, our D did look fairly aggressive and that's when most of our turnovers were generated. I can't explain it but it was like watching a track-star jog during the race and sprint the last 30 yards...unexplainable. otherwise, UAB (as we knew) was not a good team. mediocre from the 3-line even with wide open looks, mediocre inside and free throw shooting. while horrible, they did every little above, just a little bit better than we did, every single one.
Re: Congrats Doh!That game was a national disgrace. The BEAST can not be happy seeing that kind of performance.
GO PONIES!!!
Re: Congrats Doh!You reap what you sew as a coach. You hustle to get the players you need and you coach up what you don't get. At this point the situation is so pathetic and hopeless, I don't know if you can really fairly judge the players -- by now, totally playing a lame duck situation. It may have been like this internally for some time.
Re: Congrats Doh!
We need an intervention...I seriously hope that was on John Marinatto's agenda when he made his Dallas visit. For all the praise June gets for getting us to the Big East table, Doh should get an equal amount of criticism for utterly embarrassing SMU basketball and chasing away fans (and presumably causing the BEast to heavily drink) this season. I won't say "un-doing" but it's certainly following an opposite script.
Re: Congrats Doh!Drew Brees was my neighbor in high school and has been a bad as$ all his life. The fact that UT didn't want him when he was setting records in their own backyard is an indictment of their program, not Bree's talent or a testament of his heart. He tore it up in high school, college and earned his shot at the NFL doing what he always has. Brady was privately coached by one of the top QB instructors in the nation, went to one of the top football schools in California, went to one of the best colleges in the nation and was looked over by scouts...but he's not a little train that could guy. Neither is Lin. Top CA player, played on national all-star teams, beat top ranked teams in high school to make them highly ranked...big programs whiffed, got a great edu at Harvard...Golden State and Dallas d-league didn't recognize or give him enough opportunity to show his talents at an NBA level. These are all great stories, but they were all super talented from the get-go. Recruiting is part politics, part intuition, part goodol'boy and a smidge of actual evaluation.
Re: Congrats Doh!so you think a top rated high school player being coached since middle school by a nationally acclaimed QB coach who went to a top college program but got drafted 6th round...had to show a lot of heart and work his way up a hill to get a chance in the NFL? The scouts just whiffed and the Patriots waited and got a steal in the 6th round. Plain and simple. Happens all the time with athletes. Brady was groomed to be an NFL QB from middle school and given top opportunities almost every step of the way.
Re: Congrats Doh!
I agree. Worst basketball game I have ever seen. One comment though. We were not out hustled on the offensive boards. We DO not rebound offensivly. We are trained to retreat and set up for defense. There are times we throw up a 3 and our entire team is back and set up on defense before the opponent even has an opportunity to rebound. I have never seen that tactic and it obviously does not work, especially when you have a team that shoots 10% from the 3 point line that evening.
