The Bottom Line on Matt Doherty

Postby Mitch McConnell » Thu Feb 23, 2012 8:50 pm

* A career win-loss record of 80-109 (.423) -- an average record of 13-18.

* Since a 9-1 start in his first season, he is 71-108 (.400)

* One winning season (20-15 in 2011-12 with an appearance in the CIT semifianls) in 2010-11.

* No winning records in CUSA play, which means he hasn't come close to a conference championship. The Mustangs finished 4-12 in 2011-12.

* 0-6 lifetime in the CUSA tournament

* Notable losses to Jackson State, UAPB, SC Upstate, etc...

* Two wins against Memphis, a handful of wins against Tulsa, Houston and UTEP -- maybe 8 total?

* Went 3-3 against TCU

* In 2011-12, SMU committed 403 turnovers and had 382 assists.

* In 2011-12, SMU shot 41.2% from the field

* In 2011-12, SMU was outrebounded by an average of 5.2 per game

* Generally considered a low-percentage shot, 47 percent of SMU's field goal attempts were 3 pointers.

Help me understand the paranoia posting. I just don't get this. The resume and the lack of growth in this program is what it is. Mix in what Moody has become and it's heartbreaking.

If some of you are that gunshy to think that a late run (minus winning the CUSA tournament in Memphis) will save his job, then you must know something I don't.

Again, this isn't personal against Matt. But he's not getting it done. I'm not concerned about who signed and if Doherty's departure will mean kids looking to get out of their LOI. I'll take my chances with a new direction. The changes in offenses and personnel have NOT changed the tone of the program.

The Moody renovations notwithstanding, he's had his chance to take the program to another direction. It didn't happen. I'm sorry that it didn't, but it's time for SMU to move on.

I'll only panic if we learn that Doherty will be retained and an extension is announced.

But you'll have to read about that panic somewhere else.

You know that those panic threads were complete satire in their nature, right?

Don't forget the loss to South Carolina Upstate!!!

Until we lost that game, I wasn't aware that university existed. Haven't heard a peep out of them since.

that record is brutal. The worst point of all to me, even worse than losing to Pine Bluff, is that Doh has never won a single game in the CUSA tournament. So much for pulling it together and peaking late in the season. Thats why the CIT run was such a farce to me last year. The game that really mattered much more was the first round CUSA game against Rice. Doh had a team full of veterans including Papa and couldn't even beat Rice on a neutral floor when it mattered. That was the straw for me. This year has just confirmed what i already knew.

I'm thinking we will win a game in the CUSA tourney this year, nobody can go 0-6. But for Doh to have a chance to stay, i think he has to win the whole CUSA tourney and dance. It would be hard to fire somebody if they did that. Its a million to one, but until the axe falls, there is at least some chance that something crazy happens. Thats one reason i think we just should have ended it last week, Doh somehow getting lucky isn't what this program needs long term.

I get your point, but I'm the exact opposite. I could care less about conference tourneys, probably cause the ACC tourney has always been such a biased farce. I don't put any stock in one-offs, but there's no denying our record under Doh in the tourney is disgusting. Hope we win one or two this year, and I'd love to see our guys run the table, but would be pretty conflicted, cause I want Doh gone that badly. Agreed that a run in the tourney would be bad for the program long-term. He just needs to pack up & go

I imagine you hate the ACC tourney because its always a valentine to UNC and Duke and home games for them in Charlotte or Greensboro. If we played the CUSA tourney in Houston, I wouldn't kill Doh for losing to Rice, but losing to Rice in El Paso like that in year 5 with Papa was unforgivable to me.

The reason i look at the conference tourney is its usually neutral floor, nobody sneaks up on anybody else, its about coaching adjustments because usually you have played the opponent twice already, and you have to bring your best effort no matter what. There are no excuses like we just had final exams or anything like that.

I'm hoping we run the table. That said, I think Doherty is gone no matter what.
