I can remember how excited I was when Matt Doherty was hired. I thought that hire signaled SMU Basketball's return to relevance.

Bergermeister, I had the exact same sentiments when Doherty was hired. Unfortunately the powers that be thought the high profile hire would supercede the significant challenges he has and had as a motivator and leader. It's time to move on and move forward. We need to sincerely wish him good luck as he reenters the business world or broadcast booth. It has been an agonizing time for the teams, the fans and I'm sure for him as well.

I too was excited when he arrived and had thought he got a raw deal in NC. He clearly lost this team and has lost the fan base. We are entering one of the toughest hoops conferences in the Country, and we need a coach who can help us compete in that conference, and I don't think its Doh. Happy Trails.

I always knew he was an abysmal bench coach, but figured he'd recruit better than he did to the Hilltop. He's an excellent recruiter, w/very mixed results on the trail for SMU. I really thought his recruiting prowess would give us Dement-like results, not breakthrough hoops, just respectability. I was wrong

Agreed. We bought four additional season ticket seats when Doherty signed on. I believed the hype and PR instead of looking at substance rather than style. I think he should reimburse us. I really thought he would at least lead a team to five or six games above .500 most seasons. Either way, I never expected the program to sink this low, with this much apathy from the fan base. It's a really sad and pathetic situation to see the program run into the ground.

I thought Doh was the wrong hire for SMU at the time for several reasons and said so. I was hopeful that maybe his style would work here though and the practice facility would help, but i never really saw or sensesd any traction. The one thing i give him credit for is somehow pulling some good Dallas recruits this past year in Jones, Cannen as well as the Cotton and Russell transfers. I thought last years CIT run was way too little, too late. The inconsistent recruiting, roster chaos, changing systems, crazy subsitution patterns, and his overall record make this an easy decision and break for the powers that be.

He is still one of the best dressed coaches in the NCAA though. He rocks that pocket hanky.

That was my expectation. Given the issues we had, I didn't expect us to be a legit, annual top 25 team by now. I did, however, expect that we would beat all the patsies and finish in the top half of our conference.

Be nice to have a good crowd to send him off and thank the players for their effort and a few good games this year. Probably will not happen. Same 1500 die hards.

TCU was nice this year.

I remember going to the Midnight Madness practice his first year and being so pumped thinking SMU was on the way back.

I can't believe it has been six seasons!

I was very guarded at best with his hiring and posted such at the time. I am a bit of a history buff and find that things generally repeat. I did not like what I read and heard with regard to his time at UNC. UNC fans are very knowledgeable and passionate and they saw right through his glaring weaknesses very early on both as a bench coach and his ability to deal with players. Yes, he recruited well there, but any top program has a huge recruiting advantage over the programs with out the UNC history and tradition. I thought his UNC issues involved his lack of personal people skills with players, negativity and temper and that were not easily changed. Unfortunately, I do not think he significantly overcame his weaknesses and our program has never progressed as a result.
