Orsini Getting BB Training

Postby Digetydog » Mon Mar 05, 2012 8:52 am

According to Kate H, our man Steve Orsini is going to be watching a ton of basketball in March.

"Orsini, as a member of the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, will also be occupied for the next month with March Madness obligations."

Hopefully, his time on the committee will offer him a chance to see lots of good coaching.

Yesterday, I watched the ISU-Creighton game. Great game played by well coached teams that played to their potential.

For those of you who haven't been to Illinois State. It is located in Bloomington, Ill. Bloomington is home to State Farm Insurance, a car plant, ISU, and cornfields. Once, I was forced to spend 3 weeks as a hostage in the Bloomington Ratmada Hotel. Do you know what people in Bloomington do for fun? They go to Applebees for Kareoke night. For excape, we drove all the way to Peoria. Peoria??

Omaha is famous for steak and brutally cold winters.

We need guys who can win in places like Bloomington and Omaha. If they can win at 2nd tier universities in horrific locations, I am pretty confident the can win at a great University in a great city.
Do unto others before they do unto you!!

He better have that hire ready to go. W/all the high major openings that are about to happen, we're screwed if we don't strike fast.

Also, spoke w/someone very inside the MVC, and he told me that Jankovich 'isn't tough enough for SMU. He runs a very loose program, always trouble behind the scenes, and lacks discipline.' I know nothing of Jankovich, but was impressed by their run. I was sorta surprised what I found out

This is accurate.

FYI Champaign-Urbana, where Illinois is located, isn't much better. There's actually a corn field on the U of I campus.

Orsini needs to pull the trigger fast on the new hire and get our new coach in here as soon as possible. He can't delay as he did with the Jones hire. I just hope he doesn't get "schooled" again with regard to the contract with the new coach like he did with Doherty. Don't want to be spending $450K for nothing again.

Was your 7-10 day timeline after the CUSA tournament a prediction?

$450k is nothing in college hoops. You get what you pay for or don't in this case.

More than a prediction if everything falls into place. However, big "if" as you know there are a lot of moving parts.

I think we are a low major about to enter a high major conference.

I hope we prove ourselves to be a high major with our coach selection.

Technically yes, but not in the eyes of the coaching community. To get someone really good, we're gonna have to overpay

I never mind overpaying if I'm not paying.

He kind of overpaid for Doherty when you include the $450K he'll have to pay him not to coach. When you put the salary against total wins... we really overpaid.

You can thank Robodoh for tainting the position to a degree; he pulled SMU out of the Tubbs' hole they threw themselves into eagerly. Unfortunately, Doherty fell right into another hole by performing atrociously in CUSA play and losing games like Jackson St., Pine Bluff, South Carolina Upstate, etc. His W/L column advertises to a number of people that that SMU isn't good for one's career arc.

Beyond that, those who've coached here, are the first to say they find working conditions easier elsewhere. Nobody is bad-mouthing the position per se, just clearly stating that its a damn tough job and takes a certain type of toughness/candidate
