Your Coaching Search

In case you guys have any random thoughts about coming up to little ol' Denton and poaching MY basketball coach who has managed to build a solid program to replace the utter abortion that you just fired - please think again. I believe that Coach Jones is very happy right here in the only college town in North Texas.

You have a fine institution and a football program on the rise. Your basketball program though just isn't a destination job for an up and coming coach like Jones. You have suffered through some really bad years and it is likely gonna get a lot worse when you take that team into the Big East.

Not to mention, as NT grows into its role a the premier research institution in North Texas, our profile is being raised everyday. Our powerful alumni base is a sleeping giant of athletic and legacy fundraising. Our institutional advantages have taken hold and in the next decade will bear significant fruit. Any coach can see that this isn't potential anymore - it's reality. Look at McCarney - he saw it.

You take that and consider it alongside the budgetary committment that NT has made to athletics recently (and our own recent success in basketball), I just this being the better job and I doubt Jones would ever even consider a move to a program that will face huge challenges to get to .500 in their own conference.

I do think that UTA coach Scott Cross would be a good hire and you guys should be able to pick him up. Just my two cents.

Austin is a college town, so is Lubbock... UNT/Denton is more of an arshole than anything!

If you think Jones would waste more than 10 seconds deciding whether to stay at UNT or come here, you've been hanging around too many TCU football players. Question for ewe: if UNT then tried to hire Doherty, would he not rather just retire and go into broadcasting?

If you cannot go to college, got to NTSU where you will be prepared for your career at Starbucks or McD's.

"Premier research institution in North Texas" . Please

Either this guy spends his evenings inhaling glue from a paper bag or he is just trying for shock value.

How is Johnny Jones up and coming? He has been at UNT for ten years. Seeing how he has a base salary of about $200k, he would be a relatively cheap coach to lure away, but how is a coach that consistently places 4th in the Sunbelt with no recruiting hurdles going to navigate SMU's admin and convince player they can win with him in the Big East?

No reason to give $200k talent a potential seven figure salary. That is like promoting a NTSU graduate to shift manager when he still has not mastered the fry machine.

He makes over 400k and he's done remarkably well at UNT. He could easily recruit quality to SMU very easily, and had Williams & Jones not been ineligible, they'd have won the Sun Belt this year. If Mitchell returns, they have to be favored next year. He's a big time coach, don't let a troll make you forget that fact. Good bench coach, very good recruiter, and would lock down the area as SMUs coach going into the Big East. We could & might do so much worse, it's scary
