I had to run an errand at lunch. On the radio, an Illinois fan was wondering if their job was "big" enough to lure him from VCU. The host commented that Smart is paid very well at VCU, has a good thing going, and could end up with a statue on campus if he stays there long term. If we get him, the Orsini haters are going to have to eat serious crow b/c it would be a miracle.

I don't think he'll stay at VCU long term- he'll take a bigger job I think. But it may not be this year and it may not be Illinois. We would have to throw serious, serious cash at him to be a serious player for his services and I don't know who's signing the check for that on our end. Even if we do have the cash, why would he come here? We're a joke right now.

A large part of Orsini's job is getting big donors to part with big money.

Not that hard at SMU. Either way, he's not in charge of this puppy

Kate H said they have hired Academic Search led by former GT AD David Braine to help with the search. Hope they land us a whale. BTW - ironically, UNC-Greensboro is using the same firm to find a replacement for Dement.

I am a little confused. Their web site indicates that they are academic recruiters, College Presidents, Provosts, Deans. I may have missed something, but I didn't see any past or active searches for athletic directors or coaches. Anyone find anything to contradict this?

It appears that is its primary mission. However, consultant David T. Braine is a collage athletics guy so maybe this firm is branching out into consulting on major coaching searches.

So our most important hire in years is being handled by a rookie firm?
