Timeframe?

Postby ponyboy » Mon Mar 19, 2012 10:47 am

Sorry, but work constraints have required me to be away from the board a lot since the start of the year. So this may have been discussed ad nauseum. But what is the timeframe for the hiring of the new coach? Is April 1st reasonable?

It has already been too long... unless the new coach has been coaching in the NCAA tourney!

We are not an easy sell...if we want someone special it is going to take alot or persuasion and money. I would rather take our time and get the right guy than rush into another mistake--obviously you all agree. But, based upon our discussions, this is going to be a difficult task convince an 8, 9, or 10 to get engaged to a school more noted for its athletic disfunctionality than wins.

wrong - i think it is a very easy sell. big dollar salary - Dallas - perfect facilities - big east - low expectations - not sure how it could be a better job. If your job is to coach at the top collegiate level - this is an amazing opportunity. I think our issue is deciding which path of several good paths we should travel....

Let's be real, just based on the names we know are being courted, this isn't some high profile search. Just the pay increase for many of the candidates, and Big East potential, should be a pretty easy sell. Couple that w/state of the art facilities and Dallas, and we're in there. Now, IF we were really hunting that elusive white elephant, things may be different, cause we don't offer much to a high major guy, that he doesn't already have.

Although I am as impatient as anyone, this is not a case where we have been asleep at the wheel while all the good coaches have been getting snapped up.

At least some of the head coaches and the top assistants that we would consider for the position are likely involved in some sort of post-season tournament. Thankfully, college BB is not like football where another school can poach your coach before the bowl game takes place.

At this point, I cannot recall reading abouta coach signing on to a program that would have been on our target list.

I would expect we will know something no later than 2 weeks after the conclusion of the NCAA tournament. The guys we are considering that are "done" with the tourneys have prob already been spoken to. While the guys who are still in the tourney may have had informal talks with other teams, I cannot imagine them flying to a school for a formal interview in the middle of the tourney. Once all our targets are out of the tourney, it should be over quickly.

It's far from an easy sell. Being fans of the program, we may be a bit jaded on how attractive this position actually is to outside candidates. Success and visibility on the football side doesn't hurt, particularly with the Jones' turnaround situation. We'll have to see what Orsini has raised and what salary is being offered to determine the potential level of hire.

I'm an industry guy more than fan. It's only a hard sell, if you are white elephant hunting. If you are prospecting coaches that make sense for this level of program, it's an easy sell. Just don't go after guys like Shaka who you aren't going to get. Pinpoint guys w/genuine interest

Maybe SMU is an easier sell for second tier guys who want to jump to a more highly visible position. But definitely not a easy sell for coaches with proven, high level programs. It's all going to come down to $s. Always does... always will.

Sometime with the next 2 weeks I would imagine.

Well, we're going to be able to double up on Doherty's salary per Kate. A cool 1M per year. That will certainly open up some doors and would put the SMU coach into the upper echelons of college basketball pay wise.

SMU is willing to spend more dough. Matt Doherty, fired last week, made around $500,000 a year. The new coach, leading SMU into the Big East in 2013, has the potential to make more than $1 million a year.

In other words, it seems money's not a hurdle to getting just about anybody we want.
