Virginia Tech Coach - Why??

Why would Seth Greenberg be in the SMU mix? 1 NCAA birth, 4 NIT's, and a losing record in 2011-12. Last time we hired a guy out of the ACC, it didn't work out so good.
Can someone give me the lowdown on why he is in the mix?

I have the same question. As far as I can tell he:
1. has no ties or inroads to Tx.
2. coached in the BEAST for a short while before VT left for the ACC
3. is an older white guy (so is my husband--soooo, no offense intended--we need a younger guy)
4. had a losing season---where does this get us?
Now, I will admit that I do not have a great deal of knowledge and no experience hiring college basketball coaches, so I would gladly like to hear all opinions of this gentleman.

Looks like a big let down after the buzz talk

He's taken that program out of the abyss. They hadn't been to the postseason in ten years before he arrived. He hasn't been stellar, but considering what he inherited, he's done a good job, especially considering that's a pretty tough place to recruit to for bball.
I wouldn't be upset if we hired Seth Greenberg.

I have to say, no matter how this plays out, the BE move has already upped our profile and forced us to up our commitment to sports quite a bit. And I love it.

Agreed. The fact that we're even being mentioned as possible destinations for the HCs at Marquette and Va. Tech is pretty astounding, considering how badly we've sucked for so long.

I guess they kind of wanted a middle of the road type hire. I thought they wanted to hire a big name coach.

wow, took a lot of people a lot of time and resources to dig up that info. Leaking it is weak sauce
Also, Greenberg has almost 400 career wins at crap basketball schools. He's be a monster hire for us. The guy has an excellent track record and is thought of very highly in the industry

I misread a tweet which was "to" @cbssports instead of "from" @cbssports. I thought it was public. If not, I totally apologize. Not intentional Richard move.

What kind of comment is ' the last time we hired a coach from the ACC it didn't work out so well? If we use that correlation connection, then the fact that Greenberg was 2 time ACC coach of the year then he must be just twice as good as Doherty. Geez.....isolate this guys record and history and Rep in the industry..not some silly comparison

His record in the Big East at USF was 104-100.

You try winning more than he has when you have to recruit to Blacksburg, VA.

That was his record at USF not Va Tech.

USF & Va Tech are bad jobs. Greenberg is universally respected and would do very well at SMU. I'm all for Buzz, think he's a great fit, but don't get lost in splash over substance. The reality of Buzz is that he inherited a very good program and has kept it good. Greenberg has built very good, title contending programs, at schools who programs more closely resemble ours

Greenberg produces well coached teams who perform very well and are very competitive. Va.Tech is not known as a traditional basketball power and under Greenberg have become very respected. Tough place to recruit in a very tough ACC. This is a quality coach.
