Good sign that Weber hasn't accepted (or been offered) the SIU job. Weber goes 17-15 at Illinois and gets fired. Doherty barely can scrape together a +.500 season and gets rewarded with an extension. Set expectations higher and reward on-the-court performance.

Yawn - not interested in this guy. He would not excite the fan base. I will not buy tickets if this guy is the hire.

Please, no. Weber couldn't even get the Chicago and Peoria kids to come to Illinois. He went to the final four with Self's recruits. That team actually had a lot of Texas talent on it. Weber's a retread. He should take that SIU gig if it's still open.

please no. please. I have met Bruce Weber, I like Bruce Weber. Great guy and solid coach, but not what SMU needs AT ALL right now. You guys know how much i thought Doherty was not the right guy, but i think i would have actually rather kept Doh than go with Weber.

I think I would have been ok with a weber hire back in normal cusa days. But going to the BE now, we need more.

It would have been a great hire in the WAC days, NOT the right guy for this program going to the BE. NEXT

Not very impressed with this guy. Honestly, I still like the Larry Brown idea. Proven stud coach, he won't be here long...but what I'd be most fired up about is who he brings with him. (As long as we're smart enough to keep them). When the Spurs brought him in, the staff included a couple guys named Greg Popovich and RC Buford...all those guys did was hang 4 championship banners at the AT&T center.

& Please no Bob Knight - he might have been fun and gotten some wins in Raiderland, but after he left they went right back to terrible.

From his wikipedia...

Yes, he had Self's recruits, but he still lead Illinois to its first outright Big 10 title since 1952.

The next year, he won it again, and lost in the national champ. game, something that Self didn't do.

After that year, he lost 3 players to the NBA, so that is when his use of the Self recruits expired.

5 of the next 7 seasons were still 20 win seasons. 4 of those resulted in NCAA trips, 1 to the NIT.

Illinois is not a big 10 power. The run he had at Illinois was probably as good a run as they have had in the conference, and he won the first two conference titles since the 50's. That isn't bad, even if he was using Self's recruits.

Lou Henson: 423-234, 214-164 in conference, tied for first in the big 10 1 time.
Bruce Weber: 210 - 101, 89-65 in conference, won the big 10 twice.

I know that he was using some of Self's recruits the first two years, but the guys overall winning percentage is still better than Henson, and he won more titles.

Not bad.
