SMU’s search for a new men’s basketball coach took yet another turn Wednesday when Long Beach State coach Dan Monson turned down the job, according to a source.
Monson led Long Beach State to this season’s NCAA Tournament, in which it lost to New Mexico in the first round. Monson also led Minnesota and Gonzaga to the NCAA Tournament.
Harvard’s Tommy Amaker’s name continually comes up in SMU circles, though any mutual interest is unknown.

In retrospect, you can say these guys have good sense.

You get what you deserve when you aren't realistic about your program and how far in the hole it is, the Big East invitation notwithstanding.

I think it can just as easily be said that coaches have been unrealistic in their close-mindedness. People have an unrealistic view of the limitations of this program. Why not check out the campus, look at the amount of talent in this city, consider a paycheck, look at the conferernce we're going to, etc... Most of these guys have probably summarily rejected SMU based on assumptions, rumors and lack of knowledge.

Unfortunately, the coaching gossip tree is stronger than what SMU is trying to sell. When you get labeled, that's very difficult to overcome. However, SMU did this to itself by neglecting this program for 20 years and is now paying for it.

Monson learned a LOT from his experiences at Gonzaga and Minnesota so he knows jobs aren't always what they apppear to be.

The thought might be that whoever gets this job will probably be fired in 4 years because the level of competition we are headed toward.
As one poster put it.
"Why take a 33-50% raise for 5 years when it could leave your career ruined and your pay so much lower you come out behind??

Remember, he got to Minnesota when that program was going through the mess of the academic scandal. Heck, the irony is that Minnesota played Monson-led Gonzaga in the first round of the NCAA tournament the day after the academic scandal broke.
So he was asked to basically build it from scratch. That's not easy in the Big 10. But once he got through the NCAA sanction period, he was in over his head. He did not have control over that program and let the likes of Kris Humphries dictate where things were going.
He's a good guy but IMO he's better suited for jobs like Long Beach State. He would have struggled here.

And my personal motto of "follow success, not money - money will follow you" holds true here. If I were a coach succeeding elsewhere, I'd rather stay there and hope to make a Brad Stevens type of run than go to a school with a lot of issues going into the NCAA basketball gauntlet in 1 year.

Over inflated opinions, & the elephant hunts.
Time to get serious & lock up one of the realistic candidates.
Jones, Benford, Cross, Thompson.
Bottom line, can't be any worse than Doh. Lets move on with it.

Monson wasn't going to leave the West Coast which most of us knew a month ago
