I hope we did not wait too long to talk Johnny JonesKate tweet.
Kate Hairopoulos †@khairopoulos SMU could finally be getting around to talking to UNT's Johnny Jones, sources say. LSU also interested in Jones. But now we might be a battle with LSU for him. Last edited by SMU 86 on Fri Apr 13, 2012 5:15 pm, edited 1 time in total.

Re: I hope we did not wait to long to talk Johnny Jonesformer lsu player- we'll probably lose that one as well- if we really want him.
Re: I hope we did not wait to long to talk Johnny JonesThis is a guaranteed swing and a miss.
Re: I hope we did not wait to long to talk Johnny JonesBring on Cameron Dollar- dammit. just my 2 cents.
Re: I hope we did not wait to long to talk Johnny JonesThis is funny cause Jones is final 2 at LSU, and the probable leader for their gig. Better yet, he's backed by Dale Brown and Shaq...lol...and now we're just getting around to him. In a search of embarrassing moments, this may be the best. Wait till he uses Orsini to up his pay at LSU, priceless
Re: I hope we did not wait to long to talk Johnny Joneslol at our search. He should have been a top 3 candidate from day one.
Re: I hope we did not wait to long to talk Johnny Jones
Yeah
Re: I hope we did not wait to long to talk Johnny Jones"We have a great bunch of outside shooters. Unfortunately, all our games are played indoors."
Re: I hope we did not wait to long to talk Johnny Jonessteve orsini cannot.....CANNOT be this desperate....this would be the worst hire we could possibly make. This seems like a great idea to most...there is a reason why he has been at UNT for a decade. A REASON.
Re: I hope we did not wait to long to talk Johnny Jones
What makes him an undesirable candidate (other than the fact that he coaches UNT)?
Re: I hope we did not wait to long to talk Johnny Jones
I'm not concerned necessarily about that fact that he coaches UNT. He's been there 10 years, hasn't won an NCAA tournament game, recruits the players that can't academically make it to other major schools and feeds off of their talent alone. Just take a look at his lineups dating back to 06-07 when he began having success and see how many transfers and "dropouts" from other schools that he got. SMU is NOT UNT, and it never will be, he can recruit and sell kids dreams all they want, but in reality how many of those kids will actually be eligible here at SMU? Doesn't anyone agree that there is a reason why he has been complacent and at UNT for a decade? There's a reason why he was never considered by us until NOW. If he was truly the best man for the job, we would have contacted him earlier and furthermore, if he was that elite of a coach, someone would have come before now and hired him at a major school. The lack of discipline and off the court issues at UNT has been and always will be there. It all starts at the top.
Re: I hope we did not wait to long to talk Johnny Jones
Wow, I guess LSU thinks he is pretty good since he is one of their top candidates. Jones did what he had to do at UNT to turn the program around. Kind of like we did with Shawnbrey McNeal when we got him from MIami in football. Here are quotes from other boards. "His career might be .500 in conference, but since the '06 season he is 127-68 overall and 61-43 in conference. He is well respected by the local basketball scene, and is a young energetic guy. He is also a much better x and o's coach than robo-doh. He would be a good hire for us." "Most of those loss were piled up at the beginning of his tenure at UNT. He has his team in the Sun Belt title game every year as of late. The only way UNT is getting into the NCAA tournament is if they win their conference tournament and he is putting them in that position year in year out. I don't see what more the guy can do at UNT to prove that he needs a shot at a bigger job." "We will play man to man and we will pick you up at the airport." - Larry Brown

Re: I hope we did not wait to long to talk Johnny JonesI remember a kid who transferred to SMU from LSU when I was a student. The kid had a 4.0 at LSU. Flunked out at SMU in a year. Bottom line, a coach at LSU can admit kids who wouldn't succeed at SMU. Johnny Jones may be one heck of a recruiter, but if he can't get them on the Court, it won't do us much good in the BE. Ditto for UNT. And that may be why he's been lower on the list and why some of our top choices, don't want to come here.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
