Out of the blue in one of the Majerus threads, someone said "if the Chris Collins story is true..." and someone else said they thought it was a done deal and then fell apart. I searched all over this site and found no mention of Collins previously or since. What "story" and what "deal" are these 2 posters referencing that I missed? Someone please fill me/us in.
For the record, while I love the idea of Collins as our coach, I would be shocked if he would consider coming here, even for a moment. In previous instances, former Duke Associate Head Coaches have jumped to much higher profile HC jobs than this one, and I don't see why Collins -- if he were even inclined to leave rather than wait for Coach K to retire -- would not wait for a better opportunity to present itself. Second, I have often wondered whether assistants at highly successful, high profile places (who have not had prior extensive experience at lower profile schools) have the recruiting skills to be able to succeed at middle-tier universities like ours. Duke (or Kentucky or Kansas or UNC etc.) do not ever have to "recruit" so much as "scout." Those places sell themselves. Sure, offered recruits sometimes turn down those schools, almost always for one of the other top programs. But coaches at SMU have to work a lot harder to identify and then sell potential recruits on the program, and assistants like Collins have zero experience in that kind of grunt work.
That said, I would love Collins come an disprove my theory.
