UNCW head coach Buzz Peterson issued a statement Monday morning about SMU rumors. UNCW head coach Buzz Peterson issued a statement Monday morning about SMU rumors.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Despite rumors that tied him to the Southern Methodist University head coaching vacancy, Buzz Peterson said that he is staying put at UNCW.

"I'm enjoying UNCW tremendously and plan to be here for a long, long time," said Peterson via the Sports Information Department. "It's always difficult this time of year when many positions open, but I want everyone to know that I'm not a candidate for any other job. Period."

Rumors surfaced Sunday night that Peterson could join Larry Brown's staff if Brown were hired by SMU.

Peterson has a 23-37 overall record in two seasons on the bench for the Seahawks and has a $400,000 buyout in his contract if he leaves UNCW before June 1, 2012.

No but it could also mean that LB is not coming as well.

I sure hope he builds a 'high octane' staff for both coaching and recruiting. We are really behind on recruiting and evaluations.

With Buzz not the Plan B, what scenario can we expect this week:

1. Hire Larry Brown?
2. Hire a current Assistant Coach, who LB will rely and defer to on:
a) Recruiting?
b) Gameday coaching?
c) Other assistants?
3. Require LB give 3 years to role, including recovering $, if he departs early except for health related issues?

Thoughts?

June 1, 2012 buyout expires. We save $400,000 by him saying this

Funny, I had the exact same thought when I saw that. Of course, I sure as heck hope LB has his staff in place and working before 6/1 or we will be seriously behind in recruiting and evaluation (and we are already behind that curve). I'm also keeping my fingers crossed that we find a more suitable HCIW because Buzz doesn't inspire much confidence even with LB as a mentor.

Not sure which article is correct but I read that his buyout was $500k and was reduced by 100K for each year he was there. I don't think he been there anywhere close to 4 yrs with this being his 5th.
