on 103.3.
No need to comment that no ones listens to ESPN radio. I already know that. I like listening to Cooperstein and will be rewarded with his comments on SMU. Will report on what he says, so no one has to listen.

CC - you are a floundering program, that has tried a number of different directions, and haven't made the NCAA since 1993. So you open the bank. LB is one of the greatest coach in the history of basketball. Is is it a good thing for them to do?
Nate: he is good. he's got a shot in getting some kids to SMU.
CC: Of course, not a done deal until he walks thru the door. SMU is making a big splash and getting sports guys to talk about SMU. He loves the game and is a fabulous teacher. He can put his stamp on SMU and leaves after two years. But you have the coach in waiting, how is SMU served by hiring LB? because when he leaves SMU will be back to where they were. He is not a long term solution.
Nate: if he is not long time, why even go through the process. What do will the kids think when your coach leaves. Why not get a guy that will be there awhile.
CC: The whole idea is to have LB when they go into BE. SMU wins the news conference, but not a way to build and sustain the program. And while he may improve SMU, if and when he leaves, SMU will be back at square one.

No we won't. Expectation change. And when you change the expectations of this alumni base, mountains will move.
June Jones was hired to change the culture. So will be Larry Brown.

I tend to agree with you. Coop said while he loves LB, he thought we should have gone with a younger up and comer.
Brown will certainly generate short term interest, and if that can jump start the program even a little, we will be in a better position than we are currently.

I see Larry Brown at SMU much like Bob Huggins at Kansas State. Huggins was only there 1 season and brought it back to relevancy. I expect Larry Brown to stay on 2-6 years, so he should be able to have a similar impact.

Who the hell knows? He may decide he really likes a certain green at the DCC and stay here the rest of his life.

No kidding. Did he even talk about HCIW?

If we hired a young up and comer and he won quickly here, he would be hired away just as quickly. No one is going to stay here for a long time.

No way Brown stays for more than 2 years. Look at his track record.

To be fair, he did mention the HCIW, I just couldn't get it in there. When I heard coop over the weekend talking to JJT about it, he thought Scott Sutton was going to get the job, so there may be something there. He was not overly negative, just did not think LB was the answer for us. Thought it was more for a splash hire than a long term fix.
He may be right, but I am getting on board the LB band wagon.

I just wander what people consider a long term fix for SMU basketball?
A successful young up and comer = taken away to a bigger program quickly
An unsuccessful young up and comer = chased away after a few bad years
A successful somewhat known name = maybe a long term fix? But no one would care for the hire when its made
An unsuccessful somewhat known name = Coach Doh...
This is one of the best ways to assure consistency. If the HCIW actually sticks, we can be looking at 4-6 years of stability and similar leadership, with or without Larry Brown.

I think Larry Brown is the key for the jump start. The HCIW if under hard contract must have a 2 or 3 year kick in clause. In other words, you do not want Brown to come in and quit after a month and be locked into the HCIW. Sure you could keep the HCIW but again, the key is for Brown to give us the impetus to move forward quickly and transition smoothly after 2 or 3 years.

whether it is a reach or not, it is a bold step and one that could very well propel SMU back to basketball relevancy. I think it is a worthwhile hire, and hope it works out. I'll make a game next year.

I respect the heck out of Coop and sat with him at an SMU football game at Ford a couple three years back. But this is looking like a great hire.
