Larry BrownMan, hard to believe there were a lot of people on this board who thought high school kids would not know who he is. Granted he has assembled a staff of ace recruiters, but most of these elite prospects who are now considering SMU who would not give usa second glance in the past, all are pointing to Larry Brown as the reason they a looking at SMU
Re: Larry Browncool your jets, we've signed one high school kid and he's more project/stiff than impact, and we don't currently lead for anyone profile in '13. I expect we'll sign a very good class, but let's not pat ourselves on the back over being mentioned w/profile kids. Its an improvement, but a long way to go. Believe me, I hit 6 tourneys this July, many of which had SMU staff attending, and its still very unclear as to how the elite kids truly view us
Re: Larry Browngotta make some noise in CUSA this year and it would help if we could put more butts in seats to draw legitimate interest to this program
Re: Larry Brown
I actually think we're lucky national signing day is before the season, so we keep offseason momentum and PR, as not to get bogged down by w/l's and have to explain that off
Re: Larry Brown
It's a process
Re: Larry Brown
we just need to start stacking practices. And be good in all three phases. Derail the Frogs!
Re: Larry Brown
I'll be satisfied this year if we don't have 5-15 minute scoring droughts each and every game.
Re: Larry BrownMy jets are very cool. As I stated in my post, I'm not saying anything other than I think we can put to rest the question if high school juniors and sophomores know who Larry Brown is and if his name means anything with recruits. Not saying we are going to sign these kids who mention us, but just stating that Larry Brown's name means a lot.
Re: Larry BrownIf a kid doesn't know who Larry Brown is, I'm sure his dad can get him up to speed pretty quick.

Re: Larry Brown
put it this way, if he had hired a crusty staff, the name wouldn't go nearly as far w/the kids. Ulric & Jerrance are the most hip-hop staff in America, which is super funny, cause we used to have to recruit in polo's and khaki's. Our current guys are winning freshest kick contests etc. Brown did a magnificent job surrounding himself w/young coaching/recruiting talent, and that extends to our new video coordinator, ops guy, and even retaining hobbie
Re: Larry BrownI respect your opinion Hoop, so from what I hear from you, you think this is all going to work out? The reason I ask is because you keep harping on the fact he hasn't made the splashy signing yet. I look at it this way. With the transfer signings he has made he has simply been plugging up holes in the dike. I think it will be two to three years before we make our first real break through as far as signing a top ten kid. We have to get at least a little competitive before we can be seriously considered by the elite kids.
When will I start feeling stimulated??
Re: Larry Brown
Oh yeah, I think it will work out while Brown is around, not so much for Jank. Brown is a rock star at all these events w/the coaches & aau heads, more than w/the kids themselves. He literally just holds court and tells stories and coaches gather round, its great. Jerrance & Ulric are selling Brown and themselves more than SMU, which is both good & bad. As long as Brown is around we're going to get good players. Like you said, the transfers are mostly about upgrading by any means necessary, and I like the kids we've gotten. Moore/Kennedy & Head should all be huge contributors, Dickerson is the definition of stop-gap. I'm not sure when we breakthrough on a national high school type, but it'll happen. You just have to hope it happens soon, so Brown has reason to stick. People are nuts if they think Howard/Ulric are going to coach for too long under Jank. At that point it starts to unravel a bit, and the reason the Brown hire was really all about HCIW, not Brown himself. Also, its how you measure trail results. Personally, I think these guys have done a pretty darn good job since taking over. Not just the transfers, but some of the near misses. They've screwed the pooch a little, cause Dickerson isn't better than Leslee Smith and they got played by Mclaurin, the big who went to illinois. It happens though. IF you speak w/other coaches though, they're pretty steadfast that IF you're going to change the coaching industries pay structure, you better do far better than SMU is right now. Jank is getting close to 800k, 400k more than the next highest D1 assistant, to not recruit in July. He's been to basically no events, which doesn't help us after Brown retires and is sorta laughable if you think about it. Howard & Maligi get 300k plus each, and we have nothing imminent in '13. Other coaches chuckle at that. As for me, its not my money, so I could care less, but I get the point. Ultimately, I think we do well in '13, just well below what the staff wants. That's ok though, cause they are seriously aiming for the stars.
Re: Larry Brownall I know is that we have a MUCH better chance to land some nice recruits than where we were. It's a process as some say here. Did you really expect to land a big fry this early? I am willing to be patient.
Re: Larry BrownI don't have anything constructive to add, I just am looking for an excuse to post this picture:

Re: Larry Brown
Junie is probably already whining that we need a bigger plane. Of course, Junie doesn't try that hard to recruit so a good rental car will do the trick? Do unto others before they do unto you!!
