The reason I ask is because you keep harping on the fact he hasn't made the splashy signing yet. I look at it this way. With the transfer signings he has made he has simply been plugging up holes in the dike. I think it will be two to three years before we make our first real break through as far as signing a top ten kid. We have to get at least a little competitive before we can be seriously considered by the elite kids.
Oh yeah, I think it will work out while Brown is around, not so much for Jank. Brown is a rock star at all these events w/the coaches & aau heads, more than w/the kids themselves. He literally just holds court and tells stories and coaches gather round, its great. Jerrance & Ulric are selling Brown and themselves more than SMU, which is both good & bad. As long as Brown is around we're going to get good players. Like you said, the transfers are mostly about upgrading by any means necessary, and I like the kids we've gotten. Moore/Kennedy & Head should all be huge contributors, Dickerson is the definition of stop-gap.
I'm not sure when we breakthrough on a national high school type, but it'll happen. You just have to hope it happens soon, so Brown has reason to stick. People are nuts if they think Howard/Ulric are going to coach for too long under Jank. At that point it starts to unravel a bit, and the reason the Brown hire was really all about HCIW, not Brown himself.
Also, its how you measure trail results. Personally, I think these guys have done a pretty darn good job since taking over. Not just the transfers, but some of the near misses. They've screwed the pooch a little, cause Dickerson isn't better than Leslee Smith and they got played by Mclaurin, the big who went to illinois. It happens though. IF you speak w/other coaches though, they're pretty steadfast that IF you're going to change the coaching industries pay structure, you better do far better than SMU is right now. Jank is getting close to 800k, 400k more than the next highest D1 assistant, to not recruit in July. He's been to basically no events, which doesn't help us after Brown retires and is sorta laughable if you think about it. Howard & Maligi get 300k plus each, and we have nothing imminent in '13. Other coaches chuckle at that.
As for me, its not my money, so I could care less, but I get the point. Ultimately, I think we do well in '13, just well below what the staff wants. That's ok though, cause they are seriously aiming for the stars.
