UT/UCLA, now this is pathetic attendance

UT played UCLA at Reliant Stadium in Houston on Saturday to an announced crowd of 2,797. I watched the first half and it looked like there may have been 1,000 in the massive arena, which I believe can hold 65,000 for basketball - wow! I guess Houston is not the basketball city I thought it was.....

not sure why NCAA still insists on hosting games in monstrous football stadiums. It would only work in the final 4.

1) Houston is not really a UT city. Aggies are probably more popular there.
2) It was meant to remind people of the historic UCLA-Houston game in the Astrodome, but they forgot to invite the Cougars.
3) Neither team has started well and neither team plays exiting ball right now.

You can add to that list a lack of promotion. I live in the area and didn't see any ads for the game. If you want 50K+ for a basketball game, you have to promote it relentlessly.

Plenty of UT fans here but if they don't know about the game (or care), what can you expect?

I just can't believe at least 10k wouldn't show up. There are a lot of UT diehards in Houston. Maybe the alums are showing their displeasure with Barnes? If that game was in Dallas or Arlington with no advertising, i still believe 10k would show up at the AAC and probably 20k at Cowboys stadium.

A lot more than 3,000 showed up when they played Rice at Toyota center a few years ago. I think it was the wrong venue for the game and there were no cheap tickets for casual fans.

plus basketball in football stadiums is stupid. They need to stop doing that. You'd have to pay me to go to one of those.

I went to a Spurs game at the Alamodome once. It wasn't that bad.

In a few years, I plan on watching a Syracuse game at the Carrier Dome. That should be fun.

Otherwise, I agree.

Is the Alamo dome used for anything else besides the Alamo Bowl? I'm assuming they have high school games there.

When I was visiting family, the Spurs played all the home games there. Apparently, they convinced San Antonio to build them an arena

I know UTSA plays their home FB games there and assume some HS games get played there. Otherwise, I don't know.

The Alamodome and Carrier Dome have basketball configurations that place the court in an endzone and utilize temporary seating on one sideline

The newer stadia (such as Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Lucas Oil Stadium in Indy, and probably Reliant in Houston) instead position the basketball court at midfield. This allows more people to see the game, but everyone has a worse seat than what they would have under the other type of configuration

UTSA football and high school playoff games. I hate it for high school playoff games, but that is only because Calallen has never won there (as far as I can remember)
