Listening him speak about those times, I realized that the Mustangs were a national power back then. We were SWC champs from 55-58 (thanks Jim Krebs), played in the final four, and went to the NCAA Tourney 3 years in a row.
In 1956 dollars, $2.5m was an enormous sum to spend on a basketball arena. By comparison, the Longhorns were playing in the Gregory Gym until 1997. The Gregory Gym lacked A/C and seated only 4,000.
