SMU and Rice - The Owl View

Postby shadowman » Thu Feb 28, 2013 11:50 am

Rice is a class act with some great fans. They have a thread on their board talking quite a bit how they will miss being able to play SMU in Dallas.

They also talk about that game in 1993 when SMU came back and beat Rice in OT after forcing OT with a 3 point buzzer beater. Still one of my favorite games oft all time at Moody. That win tied us with Rice for the conference lead with one game to go. The next week, SMU beat a horrible Texas team and then Rice was upset by an even worse Tony Barone led Aggie team to give SMU the title out right.

Yeah, I was much more wistful about the fact that this may be the last time I ever see us play Rice than I was about them gutting Moody.

Two things that jumped out at me reading through their messages.

Is the story about SMU announcing a fake smaller crowd size to avoid issues with the fire department in 1993 true?

Also, I got a good laugh at Rice fans lamenting being outmanned because of their short bench. Certainly the only time we have seen that "problem" this season.

I believe it's very rare for a school to go through a season with only 10 on the roster. I'm not sure what happened with that program last season but it had to be something major.

We've had a great, long rivalry with Rice. I'm really sad to see things end. I had a nice conversation with a Rice couple at the game last night. Their fans are great.

I went to that game my senior year in high school. Our seats were in the very top row of one of the corners. I do not know if that story is true, but I know it was full because I bought the tickets that afternoon and they were the best available.

I had already decided to go to SMU and I was thinking that every game was going to be like that. Little did I know I would still be waiting for the next game like that 20 years later.

They lost a key assistant and their best player decided to leave (the 7 footer) for a better program. Nevertheless, the killer was a couple of other players decided they wanted to leave (Probably b/c of the assistant leaving) w/o giving up any eligibility. To keep eligibility, the 2 players claimed that the school discriminated against them b/c they were Muslim (link below).

IMHO - it seems unlikely that the school recruited them, wanted to keep them, AND discriminated against them. The NCAA let the kids keep their eligibility. As a result, the kids ended up playing at Pac 12 schools.

Bottom Line: Rice ended up down 3 of its best players AND got bad press in the process. They got hosed.

there are enough non-conference games in hoops that we should be able to continue playing these guys if both schools want it to happen

I'd rather play games against Rice, Baylor, TCU and UNT than someof the random schools we have worked into the schedule...plus with all the travel these guys are going to be doing in league play, it would be good to play some "local" teams

Rice fans and their band always treated us well. Their band always plays "Won't you stay, just a little bit longer" and sent some poor freshmen over to sing it falsetto.

I can certainly understand us not wanting to play them in Football every year, but I think basketball makes sense to set something up like we have with TCU. We should really try to keep this series going.

Ditto. They would be a nice team to play every year as part of our non-conference schedule.

Part of the reason we cannot draw squat is many of our non-conference games are not "real" sports playing schools to most SMU students, SMU fans, or Dallas residents. Who wants to go see Dallas Christian, SC Upstate, Mongolia Tech, Random School in Ohio? As a result, fans and students get in the habit of missing games and never really get into going to games.

In BB - it would be great to play TCU, Rice, and Arkansas every year. When I was a student, the best crowds were always the Arkansas games. Provided we have a reasonable record, those teams would build excitement for the conference schedule.

It's Rice Freshmen, so it's not falsetto.
