To be fair, that was the first season of the Dallas Mavericks (and they were horrible). I was at SMU in the late 80's and started going to games in the early 80's. I remember the place being about 1/2 full for good conference games and mostly full for great conference games (Arkansas).

While the recent teams haven't been great, attendance has to have been impacted by our wandering conference foes that nobody in Dallas respects. Hopefully, the New Big East will help a little.

I was there in the late/mid 70s & early 80s. WE students turned out for a crummy team. We yelled and cheered and taunted. THe meager student turnout I have seen the last 3 or so years I have witnessed games is nothing to the bad old days. And students as a rule, can't afford Maverick tickets when a student fee gets them into Moody for nothing.

It probably helps when the opponent is a relevant team that kids know/care about. If you look at football season, out highest-attended game by the students was the A&M game. Why? Because most of the students have friends that go there. The amount of SMU students that have friends at UT, A&M, Baylor, and TCU is significantly higher that UAB, Central Florida, and East Carolina

More from that era. #34 was my roomie for a year and a half. Reggie's performance as a 6' 4" center against Texas (we won) is the best performance by any basketball player I have ever seen. This captures some of his greatness that night. That was in 1979.

Its not even close to comparable - SWC vs anything we have been in since, and most Maverick games on the same nights.

Not to mention only close 1x to the ncaa tourney since 1993, truly sad but good times are ahead..
