Since we will break our 20 year streak of not making the NCAA tourney next year I looked back at our tourney history.

Elite 8 - 2 (56, 67)
Final 4 - 1 (56)

UT - 30
Houston - 19
UTEP - 17

Only 9 seasons are listed for tourney appearances- and they are mostly 45+ years old?

Edit: 1984 left off

I added 84, and your point about being 45+ years old? Does that mean they didn't happen??

I think his point is that you can see why it has been hard to "turnaround" SMU hoops for our previous 3 coaches (Dement, Tubbs, Doherty) when they are selling a school that has been to the NCAA tournament 4 times in the last 46 years. Now we have a game changer in LB and a staff that recruits their butt off. Maybe things are changing.

I know that was his point. Anyone who has followed SMU basketball knows that we have been bad for a long time, and for many reasons selling SMU to high major recruits is a huge challenge but I don't get why someone needs to bring up the obvious when I was just posting our tournament history. It's like people calling into sports talk saying Jerry Jones is a bad GM. Really? Thanks for the insight. LB has us on the cusp of being competitive at a very high level so let's focus on that rather than beating a dead horse.

btw, I think our basketball history is pretty impressive. 10 NCAA appearances and a trip to the final four is not too shabby regardless of when they occurred.

this year was another disappointment on the floor, but if this year was strategically sacrificed to make next year better, it will be worth it. It is frustrating this week to watch schools like South Dakota State roll very good, well coached teams out there in the tournament and hang with Michigan. Florida Gulf Coast beating Gtown and looking legit doing it. Even Colorado State getting it done, what the heck? Where would you rather go, CSU, South Dakota State, Wichita State or SMU? All these schools had players who would look great in an SMU uni. Larry Brown or no Larry Brown (he won't be here long anyway), SMU needs to do much better, there is really no excuse for being as down as we have been, regardless of history in the dance. Hopefully Larry Brown and a renovated Moody will change the mojo of this program starting next year and lasting for many years. As jealous as i get watching these teams, it also makes me think why not SMU?

Didn't we lose to Loyola (Chicago) in Sweet 16 in 1993?

haven't made it to the sweet 16 in the modern era. Dave Bliss' teams always won their 1st round games only to lose in the round of 32. You might be remembering 1985 when we lost to Loyola in the 2nd round. I think we had lost to Ewing's Georgetown team in that same round the year before. I remember 1987 when I was living in Durham, we played in Chapel Hill and beat Notre Dame (Kato Armstrong vs David Rivers) in the 1st round before losing to Duke in the 2nd round

I think we actually opened against Old Dominion and beat them before losing to Loyola in the 2nd round

Correct. BYU started the game on a 9-0 run and, after that, it was even with the final score being 80-71. I remember little used Ike Upshaw having his career game.

I think it was around the same time. The last NCAA game I remember them playing in was against Steve Nash and Santa Clara.
