8. Southern Methodist Mustangs

Larry Brown inherited an abysmal roster a season ago, but it hasn’t taken long for he and his staff to upgrade. The Mustangs have a chance to make noise in the new American Athletic Conference. Can SMU finish ahead of Louisville, UConn, Memphis or even Cincinnati? Probably not quite yet, but the Mustangs can take a significant step with a group that includes talented freshman guard Keith Frazier, transfers Markus Kennedy (Villanova) and Nic Moore (Illinois State) in addition to holdovers Ryan Manuel, Shawne Williams, Nick Russell and Jalen Jones. Former Illinois guard Crandall Head will also figure into the mix.

Nice having all the positive press after years of suckage.

Cannen Cunningham not mentioned. We'll have 7 new players but it's a huge bonus in having a year of experience with the 3 transfers. Hate to say I'm more excited about the bball program than football with our football opener only a month away

More press coverage? It is unreal how much ink has been spilled on SMU basketball since the Godfather came aboard. Probably more ink than the last 15 years combined.

I don't care if basketball is easier to turn around, Larry Brown has been a savior at SMU. He put together a great staff and implemented a solid plan of high visibility. Glad someone had the guts to hire him (and I am the first to admit I wasn't sold on him when his name first came up).

doesn't care who wins.
