5th Foul on Jim KrebsI want Mustang fans everywhere to be able to see some of the plays that over the years have made Mustang history. I will be posting, on a regular basis, a youtube of those plays beginning with the "supposed fifth foul" against Jim Krebs when he was guarding Wilt Chamberlain in the 1957 NCAA Western Regional game at the then new SMU Coliseum. Those of us at that game, including Jim's teammates, are even more amazed after seeing this clip that the ref decided there was a foul. When Jim fouled out there was just a little over five minutes to play and we were nursing a two point lead. Kansas scored with seconds remaining to send the game into overtime. Our next tallest player after Jim was 6"5" and Kansas did nothing but get the ball into Wilt and Kansas won. There were many people in the country who thought the Mustangs had a legitimate shot to win the NCAA if we had gotten by Kansas.
After the Krebs foul I will have(1) the 1935 touchdown pass to Bobby Wilson that put SMU in the Rose Bowl, (2) Jim Hagle's great 95 yard touchdown run against Texas in 1965, (3) Tommy Caughran's deflection of a Roger Staubach pass in the end zone on the last play of the game to beat Navy in 1963, (4) Denny Holman's amazing last second pass to Bob Begert for a bucket to beat Texas in 1965 to send the Mustangs to the NCAA tournament. Are there great plays you want to see? if so just email me at [email protected] and I will see if we have it. http://youtu.be/MnWJMm0iofM Thanks for all your support of Heritage Hall.
Re: 5th Foul on Jim Krebs1. Very cool that it is in color.
2. Not a foul. 3. Great idea on getting these SMU athletic historical highlights on YouTube. 4. Thanks! An atheist is a guy who watches a Notre Dame-SMU football game and

Re: 5th Foul on Jim KrebsLove some Mustang history.
Re: 5th Foul on Jim KrebsLooking forward to the others on the list - I don't know about any of 'em.
Where does the foul called on Jim Krebs supposedly take place? On the inbound??
Re: 5th Foul on Jim KrebsThe ball never got passed in. The referee called the foul while everyone was just standing there.
Re: 5th Foul on Jim KrebsWe even got shafted back in the 50's. good to know.
Wish you would post some offensive stuff of Krebbs and of Gene Phillips if you have it. Would love to see how those guys played. An atheist is a guy who watches a Notre Dame-SMU football game and

Re: 5th Foul on Jim KrebsObviously you're going to want to post the kickoff return in Lubbock in 1982, but why not wait until closer to August 30!
Re: 5th Foul on Jim KrebsI'll always remember Krebs slowly lifting his arm after the foul was called, and walking off. And the last SMU shot that would have won the game but didn't go. One of my profs followed BB closely and I remember his intelligent comments about games over several seasons. Of the loss to Kansas and Chamberlain he said that the official who called the foul was an activist determined not to let a person of colour be mistreated in the segregated south. I've never seen that in print but Chamberlain was quoted in the Dallas papers the next day and more or less said it was a bad call.
Re: 5th Foul on Jim KrebsCalling fouls on the basis of race. What a corrupt and foul era.

Re: 5th Foul on Jim KrebsLooked sketchy to me. Too bad we didn't get the call. Lucky I wasn't at the game, I probably would have been thrown out of the gym.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
