Is the word getting out to DFW?

Postby ponyboy » Tue Aug 06, 2013 6:50 am

Just wondering aloud whether the amazing stuff that's happening to our basketball program, in coach, in facilities, in quality of recruits/players is being heard and felt in the greater immediate surroundings of SMU. I don't want to wait until we've spent three seasons winning to wait for news to trickle to all corners of the Metroplex, for the Dallas Morning News to finally be forced to report on our team. I want the word out there now. Because, you know what? It ought to be the stuff of water cooler conversations NOW. Larry Freaking Brown is leading an historic rebirth right down the street from you, right here in your city. He isn't fighting with UT or A&M for bball recruits -- he's fighting with UK and Kansas and Louisville. Mark Cuban is throwing up blanks -- that's ok, there's still some pretty damn exciting stuff happening on the bball front in your town. Get on board before it's too late.

Its remarkable if you pay close attention. If not, we're predicted like 6th in the AAC, which locals don't even know exists. Need some huge wins and a cinderella run, then we can say hey to frontrunning douchenozzles

Absolutely. It all started with the Keith Frazier signing and the focus Ulric and LB have put on DFW. We are in on almost every national top 150 player in DFW in the 2014 class (Mudiay, Turner, Albert Robinson, Alex Robinson and Babb) and the national top 100 in the 2015 class (Elijah Thomas, King McClure, Mickey Mitchell, Tyler Davis and DJ Hogg). In fact, I'd say we are recruiting DFW for top talent as hard as any school in the region, including UT, Baylor, A&M and the OK schools. Very impressive.

You are talking about recruiting. His post was asking about buzz amongst general DFW sports fans. Two different things.

We haven't done anything yet. If we get a tourney bid, we'll see a huge spike in interest.

I think we are making some progress. I have had people talk about it with me, asking about season tickets and games. Of course we are in the time of year when people are only interested in fball.

We made very steady progress on attendance last year with a .500 team. That will continue when people start paying attention to college bball. Beating a big name and reopening Moody will generate some buzz.

College basketball is about 15th on the list of sports that people in DFW care about. Its going to take a serious tournament run with some wins over high profile teams for us to see an actual "buzz" around the program.
Back off Warchild seriously.

We have two opportunities each with Louisville and UConn.

I notice that the official NCAA stats for attendance show SMU as having 2,013 fans per game. It seemed like more than that last year but maybe not, I guess numbers were really low under Doh because last year felt like a huge improvement. The CUSA average was 5,428 and the national average was 4,994.

Good news is...Moody is a lot easier to fill than Ford.

To put this further in perspective. Hiring LB apparently only brought us up a little from the 1,970 per game in Doh's last season. That does not seem right, but who am I to argue with their numbers.

I may be mistaken. But, I think the 2,013 # was the last year of RoboDoh. Thought, I read somewhere where the Mustangs were around the 3,300 # last year in LB's first year.
