National writer: SMU basketball could give AAC at least five teams in NCAA tournament

By EJ Holland
After Friday night’s lackluster performance by the football team, some SMU fans are dreaming about the upcoming basketball season and what the future holds from a program quickly making a turnaround under Hall of Fame coach Larry Brown.

With the addition of McDonald’s All-American Keith Frazier and plenty of quality transfers, an NCAA tournament berth is not out of the question.

USA Today’s Scott Gleason believes the Mustangs could give the American Athletic Conference five bids in this year’s big dance.

“Sending five teams is certainly a possibility. Temple and Houston are well positioned to have upstart seasons, and South Florida could play sleeper. But really, Southern Methodist might pose the biggest question mark all season, as the Mustangs enter Year 2 of Hall of Fame coach Larry Brown’s regime,” he wrote. “SMU hasn’t played in the NCAAs since 1993 but have the returning nucleus and incoming pieces (star recruit Keith Frazier) to give the AAC at least five teams in the Dance. And the future is bright regardless for SMU after landing top 2014 high school point guard Emmanuel Mudiay over Kentucky.”

2014 might be a great year for SMU. But withy Mudiay, 2015 could be truly special.

OK, I agree that 2015 looks nice, but I have decided I want us to make a splash this year. If we do not make the NCAAs, I at least want to be the team that the gurus are saying deserved to go but was hosed by the selection committee.

20 wins this year would be making a statement with our schedule. In the past, we could "pencil in" being swept by Louisville, UConn, Temple & Memphis and wonder who we could beat on the road. I think we are going to be tough at home and I wouldn't be shocked to see these guys win 20 games this year. Can't wait to see a big upset at Moody...it will come against one or more of those mentioned above

I'm hoping the new Moody brings out more casual fans during the ramp up to success. No reason we shouldn't average over 5k in attendance. Sell outs should happen for the 3-4 marquee games.

We know how tough Moody is with 3k fans, imagine how hard it can be with a majority SMU crowd near capacity.
