Game Thoughts

Postby LA_Mustang » Fri Nov 08, 2013 10:17 pm

Nic Moore is a stud, the most important player on the team.

The sky is the limit for Moreira. He has a NBA body and he is skilled. Way more so than I expected.

KF is as good as advertised. Unbelievable shooter. He has to be on the court.

Our D is good but we've got to close on the 3-point shooters better.

We need JJ. Hope it is nothing serious.

The MOB was awesome. They will be a factor in the new Moody.

I actually question LB for not giving Frazier more minutes. TCU packed that zone in tight for most of the game. Keith should have been out there raining threes until TCU left that zone.
Probaly won't happen...BUT...maybe it will!!

-Better hand/eye coordination by our big men Kennedy and Moreia would have turned this into a rout-I guess patience is needed-hopefully they adjust to higher level of play. They were generally in pretty good position but just couldn't put the ball in net

-solid interior defense and rebounding. I felt most TCU rebounds were more the result of hard bounces off the rim not great positioning. TCU stayed in the game with solid 3 point shooting(44%) and much better FT% but really never consistently took the ball to the hole. They were playing perimeter ball because they couldn't score inside. (TCU is missing their 2 PFs though right?)

-I read some didn't like the deep bench-I disagree-I think that's how SMU has a chance to wear teams down this year. We did best when we pushed the ball which works well with the deep bench. For the better part of the game SMU's energy was high

-Loved the play at the Point-better than I even expected. Nic Moore was the best player on the Court -lead team in Points, Assists and even in rebounds with 8-great energy to his game

-I think Brown made a great call putting the ball in Manual's hands at the end of the game because he is a solid FT shooter

-You can't bake a cake with this many new ingredients without a little time and patience. I think SMU will improve greatly as the season goes on. Probably one of the most talented and athletic SMU teams I've seen-at least since the Dave Bliss era - once they gel SMU is going to be a tough team.

Have to admit, I was lil disappointed in Kennedy. It's just one game tho.

TCU got nothing in the paint. If Moreira is on the floor, he will swat anything out. We are long and athletic, which we will have to be to be competitive in the AAC.

I can't emphasize enough how great and important Nic Moore is to this team. He's one helluva player.

And yes, Manuel was key at the end of the game. Key FTs.

btw, this is not the TCU squad of old. They are better than most think. They have nothing in the middle but they have some talented backcourt players

Don't underrate Cunningham coming up big with some offensive boards and a couple key buckets.

Disappointed in the final score a little because we were obviously a much better team. We were way bigger and more athletic than them, it was really obvious in person.

- Manuel was great on defense, but was too eager to help. he was the one who kept biting inside and leaving the guy open on the wing.

- A couple of minutes after a great defensive play, RM was exhausted and dribbled the ball off his foot. LB subbed him out. That is a big difference from last year, when we couldn't afford to take him out in the second half.

- LB said in the post game that the team didn't practice against a zone because TCU never plays one. That was obvious. We really had no idea how to attack the zone. We signifiantly outsized them on offense but never really took advantage of it.

- The bigs made a lot of rookie mistakes you get away with a lower levels - lowering the ball in the lane, taking the ball too far behind their head on attempted dunks. That can be coached and I expect will get a lot better as we continue through the season.

- Ben Moore and Brown both have the size and athleticism to be good players, but were scared to death when they touched the ball on the offensive end. Reminded me of the rookies last year early in the season. Hopefully we get a handful of blowouts to get them time and chill them out. That will be essential prior to conference starting.

- Head and Cunningham both provided big sparks when they went in the game. I think I would really like to see Kennedy play at the 4 with Williams and have Moreria and Cunningham at the 5 instead of rotating three players at the 5.

- if/when Jones comes back, there is going to be a big-time struggle for minutes. Brown and Ben Moore may not see a ton of time this season based on how Head played and how gun-shy they were.

The thing that stood out to me. Poor entry post passes against TCwho's zone defense. If it wasn't poor passing against the zone defense, then the post players were getting the ball stripped too many times near the basket. . . Imagine it's something Coach Brown will have the team work on during practice.

We need JJ. KF is the only true scorer in this team. JJ can be aggressive on the offensive end to take pressure off of KF. It's early and we're still figuring things out.

Against good competition, Nic and KF will need to be on the court most of the time.
