Coach returns home to lead SMU against Rutgers

Former Sayreville star Rhonda Rompola returns home as coach of SMU

PISCATAWAY — Less than three weeks ago, Rhonda Rompola was within a 25-minute drive of the Louis Brown Athletic Center, where the program she built into a first-time winner will play as visitors today for the first time. But she didn’t take the coincidental opportunity to scout the facilities or the competition.

Instead she enjoyed Christmas Eve dinner with her sister Rachelle and parents John and Regina, who still live in the same Sayreville home where they raised the Southern Methodist University’s women’s basketball coach. The purpose of Rompola’s quick return to Central Jersey is to lead SMU against Rutgers at 2 p.m.
