Featured as part of the Notre Dame team that ended UCLA's win streak.
http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/He was before my time at SMU, what happened to him here? I know he led us to our last NCAA berth.

Believe he nearly had a mutiny by the team that season and the is why we wore black shoes and played a very uptempo style of offense. They were fun to watch until they list to last place TCU in the conference tournament.

He also had a habit of wearing his Notre Dame gear (ties, etc.) around campus which rubbed many the wrong way.

He started out strong with the team he inherited. Unfortunately, he was unable to bring in much talent and was viewed by some as a lazy recruiter. But, he was coaching during the post-DP restrictions that strangled the FB team.

This is pretty much my take. He just did not click and did not connect here locally with the High Schools. The talent did not get replaced. He was not a good fit post DP and after Bliss. Unfortunately, we lost a lot of Hoops momentum during his tenure, whether it was his fault or not.
And of course, we had to overcome the Larry Johnson fiasco. More self made bad luck by SMU post DP.

I seem to recall some criticism that he went home every summer and wouldn't do any camps either.

The handshake with Tommy Penders will always be one of my all-time SMU highlights though.

Shumate when shaking hands with Penders kind of slapped his hand rather hard after we lost to Texas.

Close game late. We were trying to foul Texas and the refs wouldn't call any fouls. Shumate was livid and consequently pounded the living daylights out of Penders' hand during the "handshake" after the game (amid a shower of the free little plastic megaphones littering the court from the fans).
It must have been February 28, 1989 - an 82-79 loss to Texas at Moody in Shumate's first year.

He very well might have as hard as he hit it.

I don't believe he ever lived in Dallas. Went back to Phoenix every opportunity. Not at all engaged with the SMU community. That said, he really did coach up his players and played the talent to the few strengths we had at any time.

Geez. History repeats itself (see football board).
