Confusion with Southern Mississippi?

Postby SMU15 » Mon Feb 10, 2014 2:57 pm

I honestly wonder if voters are confusing SMU with Southern Mississippi of C-USA, mainly in the coaches poll. In this week's USA Today Coaches Poll, SMU is not ranked but received 37 votes. Southern Mississippi is the next closest vote-getter with 25 votes.

The AP Poll suggests otherwise with SMU ranked #23 and Southern Mississippi only receiving 6 votes. So this begs the question, Are there really coaches out there that don't know who SMU and Larry Brown are? :?

Probably not.

Turns out USM is 21-3 or something and may end up being the C-USA champ. Not surprised they are getting looks at the top 25 with that record.

But we should still be in the top 25 now.

i would raise the issue that there are no AAC coaches in the poll but AAC does have three teams in the coaches top 25 and 5 in the top 28.

According to USAToday (who owns the Coaches Poll):

The USA TODAY Sports men's basketball coaches poll is conducted weekly throughout the regular season using a panel of head coaches at Division I schools. The panel is chosen in consultation with the National Association of Basketball Coaches. The members represent each of the 32 Division I conferences that receive an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Each coach submits a Top 25 with a first-place vote worth 25 points, second place 24, and so on down to one point for 25th.

Looks like ONE coach from EACH of the 32 conferences....

The board for the 2013-14 season: Tommy Amaker, Harvard; Randy Bennett, Saint Marys; Jim Boeheim, Syracuse; Rick Byrd, Belmont; Scott Cherry, High Point; Tim Cluess, Iona; Keith Dambrot, Akron; James Dickey, Houston; Scott Drew, Baylor; Matt Driscoll, North Florida; Steve Fisher, San Diego State; Bruiser Flint, Drexel; Tim Floyd, Texas-El Paso; Mark Fox, Georgia; John Gallagher, Hartford; George Ivory, Arkansas-Pine Bluff; Ben Jacobson, Northern Iowa; Rob Jeter, Wisconsin-Milwaukee; Danny Kaspar, Texas State; Mike McConathy, Northwestern State; Greg McDermott, Creighton; Bob McKillop, Davidson; Fang Mitchell, Coppin State; Matt Painter, Purdue; Dave Paulsen, Bucknell; Saul Phillips, North Dakota State; Randy Rahe, Weber State; Herb Sendek, Arizona State; Shaka Smart, Virginia Commonwealth; Andrew Toole, Robert Morris; Don Verlin, Idaho; Bob Williams, UC-Santa Barbara.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Begging_the_question

Begging the question means "assuming the conclusion (of an argument)", a type of circular reasoning. This is an informal fallacy where the conclusion that one is attempting to prove is included in the initial premises of an argument, often in an indirect way that conceals this fact.[1]

A simple example would be "I think he is unattractive because he is ugly."

Why do half the news reports still say southern methodist instead of smu? I thought that change was "officially made".
