You seen the kid play? 2015 SG Austin Grandstaff, Matta just put out an offer and I caught wind that we're sitting in very good shape but I haven't seen the kid once and wanted to hear your thoughts.

Insane scorer. Was planning to visit SMU at Cincy game but was unable to at the last minute

What's his offensive arsenal look like? Score of the dribble? Shooter? He play above the rim? Thanks for the input, this thread was open to anyone, I figured Hoopman may have caught him in the summer though. But thanks for the info Calallen. Sites all got him as a big-time prospect, Matta hasn't been throwing many offers out in that class given the in-state talent and a guy told me they like their chances a lot which is why the offer came

The dude is a great all-around offensive player. pass, shoot, drive etc. Lights it up offensively. NBA analogy, possibly a white Monta Ellis? Will be bigger than Monta tho.

Better shooter than monta, not as much attitude or quickness (from what i've seen), but a ridiculous shooter and good all-around offensive player.

Haha, unfortunately I don't have him on speed dial to pass along the word. I'm not too worried about what SMU is going to land, going to be a ridiculous class regardless of what 5-7 players make it up. Going to be a top 10 class when it's said and done.

I haven't seen him play but I've watched a few of his YouTube clips. The kid is deadly as a spot up shooter. He led the Metroplex in scoring this year averaging 26.5 PPG. He plays for Rockwall which is in the highest classification in TX but the district he plays in isn't very strong in hoops. I have no clue about his defensive ability. Not sure about the Monta comparison. IMO, he's a Doug McDermott type player.

I think Austin is a highly skilled player and I definitely want him to come SMU but I think he is overrated nationally for a few reasons.

1. He is by far the #1 scoring option on a relatively weak Rockwall team in a pretty weak 4A conference which inflates his impressive scoring average (about 25 ppg I think, which makes him one of the best scorers in the area). He played district games all year against rural 4A teams such as Royse City, Wylie, etc. and they just got bounced from the playoffs in the first or second round.

2. One of the reasons he can score so effectively is that he is relatively tall for a SG at the high school level (about 6'4") and he knows how to use his body to his advantage. He is decently athletic, but is rail thin and I believe he'd have a hard time scoring besides making open jumpers against elite defenders in college.

3. Austin's father, Wes, is the director of the Team Texas AAU program which austin and several other top players in the area play on, so he has been promoting his son for several years to boost his profile nationally.

As a side note, Elijah Thomas used to live with the Grandstaff family and play at Rockwall with Austin when they were both freshmen. From what I've been told, as Elijah's recruitment began to skyrocket Wes tried to promote Austin's recruitment through Elijah and get them both inivted to national camps, etc. This eventually led to a falling out between Elijah and wes which led him to eventually transfer to Prime Prep and then Lancaster where he now plays. I think they've mended their relationship since, because they both play on Team Texas now, although they don't live together. I think Elijah and Austin always remained friends though, and they regularly correspond on twitter. Austin also transferred away from Rockwall for a really brief time, to go to Hungtington Prep in West Virginia, but came back to Rockwall in less than a month.

All I'm really saying is that I think Austin is a great player that could definitely help SMU, but I don't think he's the program changer that his top 50 national ranking might lead you to believe. And if getting Austin could help bring in Elijah or vice versa, that would be awesome.

I've heard some of what you're saying, but Rockwall is currently 5A. They aren't in the same district as Royse City and Wylie. They are in a district with Mesquite, North Mesquite, Mesquite Horn, Heath, Longview and Tyler Lee. Very strong football district but a weak in hoops.

Yeah you're right, just looked it up. When I was a freshman in hish school Rockwall was 5A and we were in the same district, then they moved down to 4A for the rest of my high school career. Didn't notice that they'd moved back up to 5A

The last time I saw little Grandstaff he was 2 feet tall and Dad named him Austin to Play in Austin State Championship game. His dad might be 5-9 but mother is tall and yes very slender.. so putting some thickness on him might be difficult.

I totally disagree with the McDermott comparison unless you are just trying to find a white player to compare him to. Grandstaff is more of a shooting guard with handles at 6'5". Kind of reminds me a little bit of Westbrook.

I would take Gilder as my top choice at SG imo.
