And today, The News has simply a "College Brief" on SMU, buried on 4C.
What's today's excuse?

This is football (and more particularly) Big 12 country. We are gonna have to establish some Pony Express era dominance for this thing to be a huge story in the DFW area.

When we first got in we were the talk of the country. Go back to nascar coverage. DMN.

I really would love being in the same bracket with some of the Big XII schools and kick their butts. Unfortunately, we'll probably be put in the same bracket with Kansas.

The guy makes a good point. This is football country. The media creates football legends. They have for decades. It wasn't long ago that BB was an afterthought. A filler between the only seasons that mattered, football and spring football.

But in other major media centers (NYC being the #1 for generations), BB was very much a big deal. And it still is. Would Villanova get any love if they were located in San Antonio? Probably not. Syracuse would be little better than North Texas State University in BB.

Fact is, we do have a barrier because the local media is more football driven than BB driven.

If we didn't play in a conference with BB media pedigree, we would get no, zip, nada media attention.

The AAC has been a godsend to this BB team as it gave us nation media attention via the Northeastern media market coverage.

The guy is basically saying that Dallas and Texas media sucks in BB. And its true.

"I think they're a product of where they are in Dallas, Texas and they're history"

Their history.

Makes no sense to me. A good story is a good story…plain and simple. Who cares where it's located. We are in one of the biggest cities in the nation. If we were in Chicago all of a sudden it's a big story? Please.

Since it was a chat, the mistake was made by the transcriber rather than the speaker.

I get it that this is Big 12 country but this is dallas, the home of SMU. If this was Houston sure we are buried on the back page, nut in the DMN there is no reason we are not mentioned briefly on the front sports page daily

I'm not saying it is right I'm just saying that is the way it is. We have to keep winning, keep filling Moody, and keep reeling in elite talent. If we do that then you will see the media pay greater attention to us. IMO, this basketball season has been better for SMU's media coverage than anything athletics related in the last 25 years. We are just scratching the surface guys. Have a little patience.

Ok, let me get this straight. You have a sportswriter for the DMN, one of the largest newspapers in the country, and he is blaming the lack of coverage on SMU being based in Dallas????? What an incredible idiot Barry Horn is. Write the stories you dumbasses and we will get coverage.

All of this is true and this basketball season has done a lot to force the hand of local media to acknowledge SMU's presence (and not just in athletics). But citing our location in a major metropolitan city is a poor excuse for the glaring bias SMU faces from nearly all of the local media. The Dallas Morning News might as well print on purple paper.
