How was SMU AD so off?

Postby Duke Blue Blood » Mon Mar 17, 2014 9:55 am

Is the selection committee so secretive that we had ZERO inside knowledge about SMU and our bid? We brought those poor kids out to watch us get denied a bid!

WTH did CBS not have a little more knowledge? Something like, hey you guys are right on the edge, maybe we should not send a crew out to cover your school.

I felt like we were at a political party celebration where all the polls said we won and we were awaiting the acceptance speech and then BAM, straight to the gut.

Because it was not deemed as possible we would not get in - everybody underestimated the potential for the ACC to be greedy and unethical.

IMO there are several additional issues. First, why did our illustrious AD not plan an OOC schedule that included some decent, well-known teams this year? That is a major part of his job. Second, as head of the conference why did Aresco not do something to try and get the AAC represented on the selection committee at the time the new conference was formed? In addition, he should be screaming bloody hell at the NCAA for the snubs and lack of respect that was shown to our conference. I believe that he has enough skins on the wall to have some level of influence with a lot of people. Finally, we all realize that we lost some games that we should have won but that should not have been the deciding factor..

1)Because we were playing our non-conference games in a high school gym in Garland where most of you didn't bother to attend.
2) Because this conference was fgormed after the appointment of the selection committee
Next question-preferrably from some one that isn't such an idiot

(1) The AD doesn't make out the schedule. One of LB's assistant coaches handles the scheduling.
(2) Name me a top 100 RPI team that was willing to play SMU in a high school gym (Garland's Culwell Center). Have season tickets, and you couldn't even get SMU fans/students over to Garland.
(3) Agree with you on the AAC lack of representation on the NCAA Selection Committee.

All of this has been said before and not the question. I am talking about our Athletic Director not knowing that there was a chance we were not getting a bid. We go and put on this party and then denial! Certainly they are not having to go by Bracketology to know how close we were.

They obviously knew there is a chance we don't make it. They thought (and everyone else did also) that we were very likely to do so. All teams with a shot had these events - we are not the only ones that went home empty handed.

We announced the watch party before the tourney began. At that point we did look like a pretty undeniable lock.

Attendance at Culwell had nothing to do with it.

Anyone else find it ironic that this thread was started by a Duke fan? By all accounts, Coach K was instrumental in getting NC State a bid, which cost us ours.

He can go to Hell.

EDIT: Not implying DukeBlueBlood is not also an SMU fan. But Duke completely screwed us.

The AD tweeted out how would we like a home and home with Arkansas before the season started so I imagine he has some control over scheduling. We also could have played a few more top 100 teams on the road at at their place like we did Arkansas and not Garland last year. But let's see what happened next year now that we know how that particular committee thought. But the next committee could have emphasis on other things more that SOS. Looking forward to Wednesday.

Coach K did do a lot of politicking before the teams were selected.
