March 25, 2014

ATLANTA (SMU) - Keena Mays was named as one of 52 All-Region finalists for the Women's Basketball Coaches' Association All-America Team for the second straight season, officials announced Tuesday. The unanimous All-American Athletic Conference First Team selection is one of twelve players selected as a finalist from Region 1.

Mays finished the season with an SMU-record 691 points, averaging a league-high 21.6 points per game, ranking 22nd in the NCAA. The senior led the Mustangs to an 18-13 record overall, facing six ranked opponents during the inaugural season in the American Athletic Conference. She also became the first player at SMU to score at least 30 points in a game six times in a season, finishing with a career-high 34 points three times. She scored 32 points against Texas Southern in the first round of the WNIT, leading SMU to its first postseason win since 2000.

In 55 games on the Hilltop, the Arlington, Texas, native scored 1,115 points, ranking 18th all-time in program history. She 39.8 3-point shooting percentage is third all-time at SMU, and the Kansas transfer recorded 199 assists and 131 steals in an SMU uniform.

SMU's last player to earn WBCA All-America status was Janielle Dodds in 2007-08, when she received honorable mention recognition.

It was really nice of SMU to publicly honor Keena during the game last night - and a great idea to have Rhonda there as well.
