SMU basketball coach Larry Brown said Wednesday night that he is still awaiting official word on big man Markus Kennedy’s eligibility despite a report saying he has been ruled out for the first semester.


Brown said he expects a decision soon, perhaps on Thursday.

“This has been going on since last semester so we can speculate all we want, but the decision hasn’t been made,” Brown said. “He had to turn in a paper today. We’re waiting for the grade to be posted.”

Jeff Goodman of ESPN.com posted on Twitter that the talented power forward would “miss most of the Mustangs’ non-conference slate.”

Kennedy was ineligible when SMU opened fall practice Oct. 20 because he was not on track to earn his degree.The school announced he was working on regaining his eligibility.

Kennedy, 6-9, 245, led the Mustangs in rebounding (7.1) and was second in scoring (12.4) as a sophomore.

“He’s done everything that’s been asked of him,” Brown said. “Hopefully we’ll find out soon.”

Reminds me of Jalen Jones last year leading up to the first game of the season, although that was a bigger surprise (to me anyway). I'm pulling for the young man.
