The Huskies lost in last year’s CIF Division I state final to a hot-shooting Monte Vista team while they shot 28 percent from the field. In that game, it was evident Centennial would be a top five team in the state this preseason, but a couple of factors pushed them to the top spot in SoCal. Shooting guard Khalil Ahmad (6-3, Sr.) emerged as one of the state’s best guards over the summer and the Huskies now have impactful size underneath in Ike Anigbogu (6-7, Jr.) and Jalen Hill (6-9, So.) that they didn’t possess last year. The perimeter-oriented Huskies have the speed and length to harass nearly any team out of its offensive game plan and being a senior-oriented group should help them in close games. What you see it was you get with the Huskies – SMU-bound point guard Sedrick Barefield (6-0, Sr.) and Kyle Hamilton (6-3, Sr.) have performed well in many big games, but the Huskies will have to demonstate they can replace the contributions of graduated wing Deontae North if they are to win a CIF state title.

They are 12-4 now, ranked #5 in CA, #28 in the US. I'm trying to find Sed's stats. Here are highlights from their last game.

I thought the same thing. Very strange setup. I lived pretty close to Westchester HS which is near LAX and not in the greatest area. I guess that is their gym??

With two months left in the high school basketball season, it's a good time to present 10 players who have thrust themselves into the conversation to succeed Stanley Johnson from Santa Ana Mater Dei as the most valuable player in Southern California basketball.

The requirements to be considered: You have to play top competition. You have to lead your team to championship contention. You have to contribute in multiple ways.

Drum roll, please:

Lonzo Ball, Chino Hills. When it comes to producing excitement in a variety of ways, Ball is in a class by himself. The junior committed to UCLA does magical things with the ball. He's unselfish and unyielding in trying to get his team a victory.

Stephen Thompson Jr., Torrance Bishop Montgomery. Whatever his team needs him to do — pass, score, defend — Thompson has been delivering for the 19-1 Knights. "He's been so consistent," Coach Doug Mitchell said. "I don't think anybody is playing better."
Headed to Oregon State, Thompson is part of an outstanding group of guards in Southern California who always seem to take charge when the game is on the line in the fourth quarter.

Sedrick Barefield, Corona Centennial. The Southern Methodist-bound Barefield keeps coming through against anybody and everybody. He first focuses on helping teammates, and when they call upon him, he's ready. His offensive capability is vastly improved along with his court leadership.

Rex Pflueger, Mater Dei. Asked to step up his game as a rebounder and clutch contributor, the Notre Dame-bound Pflueger has embraced his new role with vigor and success. "Rex is playing great," Coach Gary McKnight said.

Lindsey Drew, Fairfax. Point guards are like quarterbacks. You judge them by how well their team is performing, and Drew has helped the Lions to a 19-0 start. It seems as if on a weekly basis he improves and contributes with assists, rebounds, blocked shots and consistent scoring.


Jeremy Hemsley, La Verne Damien. A 33-point performance in a win over Chino Hills on Wednesday night that lifted the Spartans to a 16-2 record provides a clue to Hemsley's contributions. Headed to San Diego State, he's calm, cool and knows when to take charge.

Bennie Boatwright, Sun Valley Village Christian. With games of 50 and 41 points this season, the 6-foot-10 USC-bound senior has stamped himself as the best offensive big man in Southern California. He has made major progress as a rebounder and it's easy to project him one day playing in the NBA.

Tyler Dorsey, Pasadena Maranatha. The competition has been tough, but Dorsey is averaging 32.3 points and put together a stretch of games in which he scored 40, 41, 36, 44 and 42 points. The Minutemen are still very much alive for a section title despite a 7-8 record.

Cody Riley, Sierra Canyon. The 6-8 sophomore picks his spots and keeps working on his outside shot while providing some devastating inside play as a rebounder, shot blocker and scorer for the 13-1 Trailblazers.

Dikymbe Martin, Riverside North. He has led North to a 17-1 record, averaging 19.1 points while distributing the ball and making big shots and good decisions. Only a junior, he's a point guard to gush over.

EASTVALE – Perfection is so fleeting that when it does occur, the natural instinct is to try to preserve it to experience again.
The Corona Centennial boys basketball team experienced that rare moment of perfection in the first quarter of Tuesday night's Big VIII League showdown at Eastvale Roosevelt, shutting out the host Mustangs in the first quarter.
That happens in football. It doesn't happen in a high-level boys basketball game between two teams on the watch list for the CIF-Southern Section elite Open Division playoffs.
But there it was, as Centennial opened its 76-54 victory with a 17-0 first quarter in which the Huskies had 12 rebounds, blocked five shots and held Roosevelt to 0-for-18 shooting. From a defensive perspective, that's perfection.
“The way we were playing defense in the first quarter,” Centennial coach Josh Giles said. “If we can channel that kind of defense or an entire 32 minutes ...”
Ike Anigbogu, the Huskies's 6-foot-9 junior center set the tone early with three first-quarter blocks. Jalen Hill, a 6-9 sophomore, and 6-4 senior Kahlil Ahmad each also turned away Mustangs offerings.
“We were all over the floor with our length,” Giles said. “We were able to block some shots. We felt if we could keep them off the offensive boards – which is really hard to do because they're so good on the offensive boards – we’d have a really good chance. But we had to box out. In the first quarter, we executed it perfect. Second and third quarter, not so much.”
Centennial (17-4, 7-0) and ranked No. 4 in the state, led 41-15 at halftime, got outscored 22-13 in the third quarter as Roosevelt pulled within 54-37, and saw its lead dwindle to 13 early in the fourth quarter before pulling away.
The Huskies now have a two game lead with three to play looking for their third consecutive league title.
Jordan Griffin scored 14 of his team-high 18 points in the fourth quarter for Centennial. SMU-bound guard Sedrick Barefield had 16 points, 6 assists and 5 rebounds and Ahmad, bound for Cal State Fullerton, had 14 points and seven rebounds.
“Our rotations were good,” Barefield said, explaining the first-quarter result. “Our guards were pressuring the ball and we finally have the length to defend when we get blown by. ... It had a lot to do with the bigs, too.”
The Huskies' start could have been even faster if not for seven first-quarter turnovers. And their final margin of victory even greater if not for 12-of-26 shooting from the free-throw line.
“It's all just a learning experience for all of us,” Barefield said. “Every single game we learn something.”
Roosevelt (17-4, 5-2) had nine players score including nine from Garrett Ford and eight points apiece from Jemarl Baker, Chris Seeley and Matt Mitchell.
“That's a really, really good team. And we shut them out for a quarter?” Giles said. “Against a great team like that, that shows what we can be defensively. Defensively, this could be the best team we've ever had. The problem is we don't always do it for 32 minutes.”

Class of 2015 point guard Sedrick Barefield of Corona Centennial (CA) was good here finishing with 24 points, seven assists and six rebounds. He went 8-for-19 from the field, 4-10 from 3-point land. Barefield wasn’t afraid to have his hands on the ball in crunch time leading his team to a W.

A taller Nic Moore? Unfair comparison, but he's got the handles, the athleticism, the competitiveness and the shooting ability. Maybe not as fast with the ball or getting his shot off (or as gritty) but he will be coachable and work hard. And he's strong and will only get stronger. He and Shake will be fun to watch. Hopefully they get one year with Nic next year to learn.

SANTA ANA €- It was an average game for Sedrick Barefield.

He scored 24 points, his points-per-game-average, for Corona Centennial in a 69-66 win over Bellflower St. John Bosco in the Nike Extravaganza at Mater Dei High in Santa Ana.

The Huskies have won 11 in a row.

Centennial, 19-4 overall, is in first place in the Big VIII League with an 8-0 league record. The Huskies have clinched at least a share of the league championship. They conclude the regular season this week with two league games, a home game against Corona on Tuesday and an away game against Norco on Thursday.

Centennial is ranked No.6 in CalHiSports.com’s California top 20. The Huskies are on the watch list for the CIF-Southern Section Open Division.

Last week, there were 32 teams on the watch list for the Open Division, which will have up to 16 teams in it. A panel will select the teams that will play in the Open Division, with the announcement of the selected teams on Feb.13. CIF-SS playoff brackets will be released Feb.15.

St. John Bosco had a new addition to the roster Saturday. J.J. Watson, a sophomore guard, made his Braves debut, having transferred to the school from Pomona Diamond Ranch. Watson spent his freshman year in North Carolina.

CORONA – The shots were falling from just about everywhere for Corona Centennial on Thursday night.
As a result, what looked like it could be a close game turned into yet another Huskies rout.

Khalil Ahmad scored 29 points, Sedrick Barefield added 23 points and fourth-seeded Centennial shot nearly 70 percent from the field to down No.13 Mission Hills Alemany, 95-69, in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Open Division playoffs.

“We’ve been preparing really well all week,” said Ahmad, a senior wing. “Everyone’s been getting into the gym early in the morning and getting up shots,”

The Huskies (22-4) shot 35 of 51 from the field, including 11 made 3-pointers. Jordan Griffin made five 3s en route to 19 points, Barefield made three and Ahmad two.
“If we can do that every game, that will give us a chance,” Centennial coach Josh Giles said. “We will be in every game if we shoot the ball like that.”

Ike Anigbogu added 10 points, eight rebounds and four blocks and Ahmad had seven rebounds.
It was the Huskies’ 16th victory of at least 20 points.

“They shot the ball, they penetrated, they did everything we tried to stop them from doing,” Warriors coach Troy Meeks said. “They’re just really, really good.”

Centennial will visit No. 12 Orange Lutheran in the quarterfinals Wednesday. It also clinched a spot in the CIF State playoffs with the win.
Both teams came out at a breakneck pace in a 93-point first half. The Huskies led 50-43, largely due to a pair of momentum-swinging 3-pointers by Barefield in the final minute.

Alemany (21-7) couldn’t carry over its offensive success into the second half, but Centennial did to turn it into a rout.

Griffin hit consecutive 3-pointers out of the break to fuel an 8-3 Huskies run and give them their first double-digit lead.

They took a 69-57 lead into the fourth, opened the final quarter on a jaw-dropping 20-2 run – highlighted two by rim-rattling dunks by Anigbogu – to make it 89-59 with four minutes left.

“When we came in at halftime we talked about getting stops because we couldn’t just keep exchanging baskets with them,” Ahmad said. “We started getting stops, and the points just kept going up and up.”

It was SMU vs. UCLA again Saturday as Corona Centennial (SMU's Sed Barefield) met Chino Hills (UCLA's Lonzo Ball) in the regional playoffs. Chino Hills won, 62-51.
