Alicia Froling Scores Career-Best 27 Points In SMU Win
Feb. 7, 2015
ORLANDO (SMU) – Freshman Alicia Froling scored a career-high 27 points, and SMU used a late 17-2 run to top UCF, 70-60, at the CFE Arena on Saturday afternoon.
SMU (5-17, 1-10 The American) dominated the last 4:30 of the game, starting with a three-pointer from Froling to cut UCF's lead to 58-56. After one made free throw from freshman Stephanie Collins, junior Gabrielle Wilkins gave SMU a 59-58 lead with a layup at the 3:22 mark.
The Mustangs were clutch from the free throw line late, making six of their last seven free throws to extend their lead and close the game. After a pair of free throws from Bolton, Froling was fouled as she made a layup to push SMU's lead to five. Froling missed the free throw, but junior Destynee Hives-McCray grabbed the offensive rebound to secure an additional offensive possession for the Mustangs. Bolton then drilled a three-pointer with a defender in close from the right corner to push the Mustang lead to eight with just 0:54 to go.
SMU held a 29-28 advantage late in the first half, but UCF closed the period with five straight points to have a 33-29 lead at halftime.
The Mustangs had a season-low 12 turnovers and made 50 percent (13-of-26) of their field goals in the second half. Froling's 27 points were the second-most ever by a freshman at SMU and the most since Leann Shaw had 31 against UTSA on Feb. 2, 1983. Froling also had 10 rebounds, marking her fifth double-double and third in her last four games.
Bolton had 12 points, scoring in double-digits for the third time in four games and the fifth time this season. Wilkins had nine points, five rebounds and three assists, while Hives-McCray had eight points and six rebounds. Collins scored seven points and grabbed seven rebounds in 26 minutes, all of which were season highs.
UCF (7-16, 3-9) was led by Zykira Lewis, who scored 21 points. Fifi Ndour grabbed 10 rebounds and both Brittni Montgomery (13) and Aliyah Gregory (12) each scored in double-digits for the Knights.
