Absolutely. Great Jayhawk that I wish would have ended on better terms with the school.

RIP Coach Smith. Here's to living life "the right way". What was most impressive about Smith was his longevity -- adaptability through several decades of major culture changes that impacted the game. He's a model of how it's done. 1961-1997. Just think about that and the changes during that time. He succeeded in every era and built a strong family loyalty around the program in the process. Truly amazing life.

He's a legend, no doubt. Biggest and best thing he did for that program was instilling a culture of family. Carolina guys all come back, give and love being a part of that program and its success. That's not easy, especially w/attitudes etc.

Now, here's how I'll remember him. Dean Smith was a choker of the highest order. He should have won 5 more titles w/the talent he amassed over the years. Lesser programs do it w/far less talent.

Coach Smith was not just a Basketball guy/mentor ... he was special to all the UNC students and Athletes. A regular at football and baseball games to be sure. Truly a very kind hearted and sincere person. The great John Wooden said he was the greatest practice coach he has ever seen ... no team matched the preparedness of his for a game. In fact, coach Wooden came to UNC to watch one of his practices (Wooden did that for no one), and he asked coach Smith to come to one of his. Coach Smith never missed a SINGLE Practice, nor was ever LATE to a single practice.

Very few have ever been like (or close) to him, and very few will .... yes SMU ... we are lucky to have one that at the very least is very close to that in LB.
