Love for Nic

SMU fans know the name Nic Moore.

The 5-foot-9, 170-pound junior point guard is simply electric on the basketball court, leading SMU with 14.6 points and 5.4 assists per game this season. Moore is arguably the top player in the American Athletic Conference and one of the best point guards in the nation.

Still, Moore isn’t exactly a household name around the country. That may change soon if the Ponies continue their success and make the NCAA tournament. In fact, USA Today’s Eric Prisbell believes Moore will be a must-know name come March.

“After narrowly missing out on the NCAA tournament last season, SMU is poised to reach the NCAAs for the first time since 1993,” Prisbell wrote. “The Larry Brown-led Mustangs could earn a single-digit seed if they continue their success in the American Athletic Conference, which means fans could have the opportunity to watch one of the nation’s most poised point guards in Moore for multiple games.”

Moore originally began his collegiate career at Illinois State under Tim Jankovich, now an assistant on the Hilltop. In his lone season with the Redbirds, Moore led the team in assists.

After sitting out a year due to NCAA transfer rules, Moore made his presence felt as a sophomore, starting all 37 games and averaging 13.6 points per contest. Moore was a main reason SMU reached the NIT championship game. And he’s taken an even bigger step as a junior.

As Tulsa coach Frank Haith put it:

“I told him after the game he was one of the best players — not just point guard — we have played against all year. He is a coach on the floor. There wasn’t a possession when he was not talking. That’s what you are trying to preach to your kids. And he has got it figured out. He is phenomenal. He has great disposition on the court.”

I love how he has kept his intensity but gotten a bit more under control. That wrestle his had for the ball Saturday was great, especially when he made sure he came out of the scrum with the ball.

Yeah, that was just awesome!

It was also a situation where last year he very well probably picks up a T.

Watching that play, along with seeing MK makes me realize how much these guys learned from last years snub and have a ginormous chip on their shoulder.

What I love about Nic is the amazing chemistry he has with Markus. They feed off each other. Together they are electric to watch. And this "family" atmosphere is in each player, instilled by LB.

Watched the inbounds play where UConn fans wanted a technical or more in a Nic 'shove.' UConn player (44?) was clearly auditioning for a Broadway play on that one and the ref handled it perfectly.
