Perimeter defense = sadness

That was a pathetic display of defense today.
Yes, we won. But who feels good about that effort?

When ECU knocks down 15 three point shots on you there is an inherent flaw in your scheme. Larry was lucky tonight. He got outcoached bad considering he had the vastly superior talent.

Last week, a single opposing player sunk ten 3's on us. We still won.

Today, a team sinks fifteen 3's on us. We still won.

Call me crazy, but I am not scared of three point shooting teams anymore.

Our man to man defense is designed to give help and double team. When they double team a man is going to be open if the player that is doubled teamed can find him. They just knocked down the 3 point shots.

If we play a team that is REMOTELY more competitive with us in the paint and they shoot 3s like that, we lose the game. How is that not worrying?

I am officially tired of people saying Brown was out coached in games we win. I could coach kids to dribble, dribble, dribble and shoot a 3. I could not coach a defense to shut down a team for the last 7 minutes of a game.

He absolutely got outcoached. ECU is one of the worst teams in D1A. If they had won today it would've been their best win this year BY A MILE. We have three guys that have a legit shot at playing at the next level. They have zero. Larry was outcoached. Period. Thankfully for him and us he's recruited well enough to overcome that.

A team that plays well in the paint isn't going to launch 30 plus 3s. We trap a lot and switch on screens (mostly bc we are very athletic so the switch doesn't bother us like most teams); sometimes that leads to 3s.

Like i posted on another thread, most of the threes they shot in the half court were really deep or contested. Our problems were primarily in transition defense and the secondary break. Fortunately, the latter problem more correctable than a schematic flaw would be.

Last I knew, and granted I am old, recruiting is part of coaching, as is defense, as is offense, as is winning. So let's add it up. Brown won on recruiting, offense, defense, and oh yeah scoring, and winning. I will keep Brown, you can have Lebo.

That's a team we should've beaten by 20. Every other Top 25 team in the country would've had this thing wrapped up by the half. We allowed a team that won 3 road games all season to knock down 15 three point shots and come within a whisker of beating us. We were more talented at nearly every position on the floor and it should've never come to that. Period. Larry has to adjust for us to stand a chance against quality opponents away from Moody.
